About S. Crump

At the November 2023 Stratasys LIVE Unveiling, Crump introduced the F3300, a new FDM system. He stated that in his "wildest dreams" he never thought FDM technology would become as productive as this system. The event also featured a customer, Dallas Martin from Toyota, who said the machine "knocked it out of the park" in addressing user feedback, citing improvements in speed, sensor technology, and larger spools. In earlier appearances, Crump discussed the continuous build 3D demonstrator, describing it as a cloud-based system capable of producing up to 5,000 parts per day without a tool, with scalability achieved by adding printer modules. He also spoke about the expansion of 3D printing into lower-price systems and new applications, including architectural models, military uses, and medical applications. Crump noted that augmented manufacturing—using 3D printing for jigs and fixtures—is a proven solution that is often overlooked by mainstream media, and he emphasized that the future of 3D printing is "infinite," limited only by imagination.

Hello, I'm Seungsang Lee. I'm starting a YouTube channel. The topic of this channel is 3D printing, specifically industrial 3D printers. I'll explain how 3D printers are actually used in the field, the direction of developing technologies, the latest information, and various cases of manufacturing technologies and equipment usage. First, let me introduce myself. I work for a company that specializes in total 3D printing solutions. We focus on industrial 3D printers for domestic commercial use, and we also handle 3D scanners, printing services, and manufacturing services. Since 2005, we have helped build the most industrial 3D printers in Korea and have the most use cases. So we can obtain information faster and more professionally about industrial 3D printers and provide services to Korean manufacturers, institutions, and schools. The reason I started this channel is that 3D printing became known to the general public in Korea around 2014. However, even in manufacturing, many people still don't know about 3D printer technology, quality, how to use it to create value, and how advanced it has become. Recently, many people have become very interested, so I hope this channel can help them as well. I'm not good at speaking or used to YouTube, so please understand if I'm lacking. Today, I prepared a light topic. I'll talk about S. Crump, who could be called the father of 3D printing. He patented the most common 3D printing technology, FDM, in 1988. The first 3D printer technology was actually invented earlier, with stereolithography patented in 1986. FDM, patented two years later in 1988, became the most widespread technology. I'll show you an interview with S. Crump, the inventor of this technology. I met him at the Stratasys partner meeting earlier this year in Florida. I was very excited at the time, and since it was my first interview, I was a bit awkward, but please watch.

Thank you. We made the first 3D printer 30 years ago. It was really hard, but we made it with passion. The 30 years of data, how did you know? It was great.

He said he started by making toys for his daughter. He used glue to stack layer by layer. His daughter was his first customer, and his wife's company used it for product development when making prototypes took too long. So he created a way to produce prototypes faster. Even today, 3D printers are mostly used for making prototypes.

At Stratasys, we are the speaker, the standout station, winners. Yes, later. Yes, that feature.

Today, Stratasys, the company Crump founded, still has the world's largest market share. The 3D printing industry grows over 10% annually. Such growth is rare. I asked him if he expected this growth. He said he expected even faster growth, maybe in 10 years, but it took longer. Still, he said it will grow bigger in the future. This is his 1988 patent. It shows the FDM technology. The computer is connected to an XYZ axis, controlling the printer automatically. The patent describes this well. I sometimes see S. Crump. When he comes to Korea, he really likes soju and dog meat. So I bring soju as a gift when I meet him. He is the person who first thought of and developed this industry. He currently works as Stratasys' Chief Innovation Officer. I will continue to create interesting and useful content. Thank you.
