Balaji Srinivasan, former CTO of Coinbase, gave a tour of the Network School, a community he co-founded on reclaimed land in Singapore. He explained that the school is a proof of concept for his broader vision of network states, where communities are formed online and then materialized physically. He noted the site has zoning for expansion to 700,000 people, with current infrastructure ready for 25,000 units. Srinivasan emphasized the community's focus on shared interests like AI, bio, and crypto, and its appeal to families, with amenities like a daycare, gym, and included meals. He highlighted that Coinbase is opening its first office there in a few days, and mentioned that 30 people from the school participated in a race in Singapore, with one podium finish. He stressed the replicability of the model, suggesting it could lead to new cities and even countries.

Good to see you. We're here at the Network School. This is super cool. If you have a look around, perhaps you can pan around here. Lots of greenery. Lots of great places to live. It's really beautiful. And this is the entrance, right? Yes, sir. Very exciting. Yes. We're going to take a tour.
Balaji Srinivasan 0:18 ↗
All right. So, this is one of our buildings here. So, basically taking this over, turning into V1 campus. And we managed to materialize many tech people. Rather materialize them in SF, or New York, or London, we found a new spot. And it's cool.
Interviewer 0:37 ↗
And this is incredible. I mean, it's not that long I heard about you talking about this at a podcast, and now it's real. And there's people from 100 nations here. I have lots of friends who spend time here. They're raving about it. We have friends joining now. Couple of them are behind us over there. It's very cool, huh? Founders everywhere. Yes, sir. Okay, can we have a look outside?
Balaji Srinivasan 1:02 ↗
Sure. Oh, actually there'll be a better shot outside this building.
Interviewer 1:06 ↗
See outside. And here. Hello. Hey, guys. This is just a dining area, hang out area. Nice. Hello. Learn, earn, burn. Trying to get some exercise. Ah, great atmosphere. It's nice, right? Yeah, I love it. It's like a college cafeteria. Oh, wow. Look at this space. Oh, this is awesome.
Balaji Srinivasan 1:51 ↗
So, that's Singapore over there. Yes. And I live in Singapore, and at least it took me 40 minutes to get there from the door. That is the Fiat crypto bridge.
Interviewer 2:04 ↗
Oh, brilliant. The Fiat crypto bridge.
Balaji Srinivasan 2:06 ↗
Exactly. From Yeah, right. And beaches. See, here is some beach. You can jog along the beach. This is what may become Tecno Alto. Over there, and then all the skyscrapers and stuff. A lot of potential here. Amazing potential.
Interviewer 2:21 ↗
And you were saying already now there's like 25,000 units or so here. Yes. That's right. Already ready to go. Empty. Yep. And I heard that there's even like planning to potentially build it out to like 700,000 people.
Balaji Srinivasan 2:34 ↗
All of this space over here, they actually have the zoning to expand. This is actually only 1/10, 1/5, 1/20 to 1/10 of the full land area that they would build. What they lack is just people and capital. They don't lack blueprints or permits.
Interviewer 2:51 ↗
Wow, this is awesome. So. Very nice.
Balaji Srinivasan 2:56 ↗
And the general concept I think is that we will prove out what we're doing here at Network School. Network School itself, as I mentioned, is Network School is Network State is Chinatown is in China. This is not sovereign in any way. This is just a community. It's a cool community of a bunch of people. And we prove that you can print out the internet. You can materialize the cloud upon the land. And then we spread that all over the earth. Right? We show that you can make sharp societies, that there's a new birth of freedom. And we show that it is possible to start not just new companies and new currencies, but new communities, new cities, and perhaps in the fullness of time even new countries. And we can negotiate real estate from somewhere else in the world, and get our own special economic zone, and somewhere else may want us to do even more, right? But, we're already pretty far along. I mean, this just started 18 months ago. You know, this was totally totally empty before then. Yeah.
Interviewer 4:08 ↗
And all all great networks are exponential as we talked about earlier.
Balaji Srinivasan 4:13 ↗
So, people invite each other here. That's a big part of it. So, it has two things that usually aren't together. Technology is viral, and then there's real estate, which is spatial and physical, and scales up. Technology scales out. So, we have something where people invite each other to live here, because we're actually building a true community, right? And that's easier said than done. There's a lot of things that go into that. It is not simply just gathering a bunch of strangers. They have to have, it it it's a difference between picking a thousand people and picking a thousand people in the same social network. That social network has to exist in the cloud first before it gets printed out on the earth. But then, once it does, then these people can get along pretty well, right? And we are very much grouping people by shared interests. They're into AI, they're into bio, they're into crypto, they're into quantum, they're into photonics, they're into robo, all kinds of stuff, right? And so, you have people coming from different countries, and they learned to hang out with each other, but they also have similar interests. And so, there's cross-cutting. So, there's both, the state aspect and the network aspect. And it's cool. It's basically what you and I are part of the global tech community, the internet, even if we don't spend very much if any time in America anymore, right? Cuz internet is actually bigger than that, and it's a global thing. And this is an internet-first community that is built on as close to a blank slate as you could have. Cuz this is even reclaimed land, by the way. So, this land didn't even exist 10 years ago, right?
Interviewer 5:49 ↗
This used to be oceans.
Balaji Srinivasan 5:50 ↗
It used to be oceans, right? So, just that concept of like from nothing something. Super cool, right? And it's replicable. Because you can do reclaimed land all over the place, right?
Interviewer 6:04 ↗
It also shows what the great founders can do, right? I mean, this was an idea what, two two three years ago? And then now it's real, yeah.
Balaji Srinivasan 6:15 ↗
Of course. So, with the team, right? You know, like I couldn't have done it without all of our team and all of our guys. And it's everything is easier and harder than it looks, right? In a sense. The concept behind the Network School is basically what we're executing on. But, you know, Einstein had this great saying, which is like, "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice they are not." Right?
Interviewer 6:47 ↗
What I also really liked, we were talking about on the podcast, is you obviously are excited about people building on this and building in other places across the globe. Yes. So, also kind of encourage people to reach out with regards to that. Cold plunge? Over here. Yeah, look at this. Cold plunges. I love that. Very nice. Pretty cool. I also said earlier, everyone is very fit at the Network School. Yeah. Here. Sauna, cold plunge. Oh, wow, look at this gym. This is why everyone is very fit there. This is incredible, huh? Here we have everything.
Jackson, can Can take a quick photo of us here? If you don't mind. All right. Okay. All right, you can use my phone if you want. Sure. And say when. Go further in. Yeah, I'll take the banner, yeah. This is awesome. And that's not come burn. Yeah, I love that. I do think this is one of the best gyms in this area.
Balaji Srinivasan 8:05 ↗
This is the best gym I've seen in the area. This is awesome.
