About Sajjan Jindal

Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW Group, was named Business Leader of the Year at The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence in December 2025. In a conversation published in October 2025, Jindal stated that his ambition is to become the world’s number one steel producer. He said he does not plan to retire and told his son that he will continue running the business. Jindal also described Prime Minister Modi as a “big picture man” and said he chose to enter the automobile business because India should rely on its own energy sources rather than imported fuel. In 2026, JSW Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 25 MTPA steel plant at its Vijayanagar Works, which Jindal described as the world’s largest steel plant at a single location. He said the target for completion is 24 months, referencing a Chinese record. In April 2026, JSW and JFE Steel inaugurated a 10 MTPA joint venture plant in Sambalpur, Odisha, which Jindal noted is JFE’s first integrated steel plant outside Japan. He said JSW is building four steel plants simultaneously in Odisha, which he called unprecedented globally. Jindal also commented on India’s energy policy, arguing the country should rely on solar, wind, coal, and nuclear power and criticized the difficulty of accessing government R&D funding.

The vulnerable Prime Minister has been saying has made a statement that by 2024 India will become a five trillion dollar economy, and by 2030 India should become a ten trillion dollar economy. Now, if India has to become a ten trillion dollar or a five trillion dollar economy by 2024, then Odisha has to play a very important role. And the state of Odisha has all the ingredients to become a trillion dollar economy itself. It's an aspirational number, it's not very easy, but if we work diligently and if we work in a coordinated fashion, then it can become a trillion dollar economy. And my whole purpose of today's visit was to discuss with the Honorable Chief Minister how we can push the aspirations of Odisha to become a trillion dollar economy. So, you know, Odisha has nature has given very large natural resources to Odisha, whether it is in the form of coal, iron, or manganese, or chromite ore. So all the downstream industries must get developed there. There is a vast coastline, there is a large pool of high quality people. So if you put all these things together, then we can create a tremendous industrial environment. And as per our study which was conducted by PwC, we find that a 500 billion dollar economy can be created generated through the industrial setup, and another 500 billion dollar economy will happen through agriculture and services. Because just like in the year 2000, the IT industry became a big factor for India's growth, similarly now in the next two decades in Odisha, industrialization, specially metal and mineral based industries, value addition based on value addition can become a big creator of this trillion dollar economy. It might take more than 2030, but aspiration once we have the aspiration, once we have the thought process, once we have the plan, then whether it happens in 2030 or 2040, it doesn't matter. But what is important is that aspiration is there, game plan is there, resources are already there. So once we have the mindset, once we have the dream that we have to become a trillion dollar economy, every Odia must become a rich person or a very well-to-do person, then automatically things will start rolling. Right now there are a number of initiatives, steps are going through. Once all the steps are forest clearances and other clearances are underway, once all that happens, then we will be taking the next steps.
