About Phil Spencer

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has stated that the company's primary use of AI within Xbox is for platform moderation, such as identifying and filtering offensive or spam-related content. He noted that AI is not currently used in the creative aspects of game development, saying he leaves those decisions to individual teams. Spencer also suggested AI could potentially be used in the future for game discovery and curation, acting as a personalized recommendation engine. Spencer has discussed the future of Xbox hardware, indicating that the company is working on new form factors, including a handheld device, and emphasized the importance of being able to play games locally. He stated that Xbox games will continue to appear on more platforms, including PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, saying the company wants its games to be available where people play. Spencer described this strategy as putting games first and not putting up walls around where people can engage with Xbox, while also affirming that dedicated Xbox hardware remains a fundamental part of the brand.

All right gang, we're just a few minutes away from the Xbox Entertainment Evolved event, and we still have an exclusive look at Halo 4 on the way. But one thing is already clear: Microsoft comes into E3 2012 with an eye on the future. And steering the course for the Xbox 360 is the head of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer, who's here with me now. Phil, thanks for joining us, man. Tell us about Microsoft at E3. What do you guys got?
P
Phil Spencer0:26
It's going to be a big E3 this year for us. For me, Xbox is always about bringing great games to the show. We're going to show Halo 4, we've got a lot of great third-party games to show in the briefing. It's going to be an amazing show for the fans.

Absolutely. Digital distribution is huge for you guys as well. And last year on this very stage, you talked about Twisted Pixel joining the Microsoft family. Is anybody else joining the fray this year that you can tell us about?
P
Phil Spencer0:48
Well, thank you for asking. No, it's great because in the digital distribution area, we've got a lot of small creative studios that are doing a lot of work to build new stories, new IP. This year we're proud to announce Press Play, a small developer in Copenhagen, the developers behind Max and the Magic Marker and Tentacles. They'll be coming part of Microsoft Studios as well.

Excellent. Obviously this time of year as well, Summer of Arcade is what everybody's talking about. Last year you told us about the lineup exclusively here on our All Access coverage, and we're going to do the same this year. What games can we expect during the Summer of Arcade, Phil?
P
Phil Spencer1:20
You know, Arcade has been an amazing success. I mean, before we get to Summer of Arcade, I have to just talk about Minecraft. We're at 2 million units of paid downloads of Minecraft coming out of the Arcade next promotion, which also had the second version of Trials, which did amazingly well. And if you just look at the franchises that have been created there, Castle Crashers, Uno, you've got some really big games that hit this space. Right, so we know this year coming to the space is going to be Hybrid first, right, from Fifth Cell. What can we know? What do you want to tell us about that? Our local Bellevue boys, we like Fifth Cell. Hybrid, we did a beta a little bit earlier this year on Xbox Live Arcade. New form of shooter, flying around, really exciting game. It'll be a great addition to Xbox Live Arcade. A game I'm super excited about is Deadlight. Tell us about that. Yeah, for those fans of the side-scrolling shooting games, kind of think Shadow Complex a little bit. A lot of mood in the game, very well done. It's going to be an exciting part of the lineup. And obviously an all-new Kinect experience is coming to the Summer of Arcade with Wreckateer. Yeah, yeah, Wreckateer is a game we've had in development for quite a while. It's an internal game for us, something we've been working on. I think you're going to be able to... All of these games will actually be demoed on the show floor at E3, so people can get their hands on them. Wreckateer is a lot of fun, Kinect only. And it's hard to go wrong with Tony Hawk, right, who's also a part of the Summer of Arcade. I mean, Tony Hawk, one of the pinnacles of gaming franchise, has been around for a long time. Bringing the Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD to Xbox Live Arcade this summer, great move by Activision. And Dust is a very, very interesting title. It looks beautiful. What's it all about? Yeah, Dust is kind of a side-scrolling, looks a little Asian, Japanese RPG type of game. I'm really interested to see how the fans react to that game. It's very well done, high production value. It's been in development for a long time. I think it's really a passion for the developer there.
