On , Scott Schnell, Senior VP & Executive Strategic Advisor at Verisign, spoke about search trends during Verisign's Scott Schnell Explains How Domain Names can Drive Hosting Sales on CloudFest.
Scott Schnell, Senior Vice President and Executive Strategic Advisor at Verisign, gave presentations at WHD.global 2017 and WHD.usa 2017 on the relationship between domain names and hosting sales. Schnell stated that domain name searches are "ten times larger than email and a hundred times larger than hosting-related searches," and argued that web hosts can use domain names to attract customers earlier in the purchasing process. He described a tool being developed by Verisign Labs that helps users brainstorm domain names, which he said includes a REST API for hosting companies and registrars to integrate into their services. Schnell also discussed the reliability and awareness of the .com top-level domain. He stated that .com and .net had "never stopped resolving for 20 years continuously with zero downtime" and that .com handles "on the order of one hundred and forty-five billion transactions a day." He noted that .com has "very stable pricing for the last twenty years" and that its high awareness "breeds trust and confidence" among users. Schnell mentioned that there are "literally billions of available domain names" in .com and .net, and that multi-keyword domain names are popular among current website builder customers.
