“For Aptiv and for me, the software-defined vehicle means three primary things: separating software from hardware, the ability to update the software independently of the hardware, and the ability to collect data, learn from it, and continuously make the system better in real time.”
On , Javed Khan, Executivr Vice President and President of Software and Advanced Safety & User Experience at Aptiv, spoke about software-defined vehicles during At The Intelligent Edge ft. Javed Khan of Aptiv on AutoVision News Radio.
In an August 2025 podcast appearance, Javed Khan discussed Aptiv's approach to software-defined vehicles, describing the concept as involving three primary elements: separating software from hardware, enabling independent software updates, and using data collection to continuously improve systems in real time. He emphasized that "software at the intelligent edge" allows computationally expensive activities to be performed inside the vehicle, supporting real-time decision-making for autonomous driving and advanced user experiences. Khan also noted that the primary advantage for car buyers of advanced driver-assistance systems operating at the edge is safety, along with better navigation and personalized experiences. Khan stated that a significant part of his role involves running a profitable and growing business, including customer engagement and technology sales. He highlighted the importance of modular solutions and the role of Wind River as a hardened operating system for safety-critical systems. Khan said he encourages a continuous learning mindset among engineers and leaders, particularly regarding AI, and that he values the opportunity to apply over 20 years of software and technology experience to the automotive industry, working across multiple OEMs to impact everyday lives.
