Christian Gianni, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Technology Officer at United States Steel, said in a September 2023 interview that he was not initially seeking a role at the company but was approached and became "hooked" after interviewing with CEO Dave Burritt. He stated that the company's "people, the culture and the values all aligned with what I wanted to do." Gianni, who is originally from New Zealand, moved to the U.S. in 2010 to join Whirlpool, where he spent 12 years and eventually became CTO. He later worked at DEKA Research in the medical field before joining U.S. Steel. Gianni described himself as passionate about product development, innovation, and the environment, and said he sees an opportunity at U.S. Steel to work with employees and customers to deliver innovation to the marketplace. He characterized himself as having the ability to inspire and lead people, as well as having courage and drive, and noted that he considers being an optimist critical when undertaking difficult work.
