He stated that the drug had received over 7,000 prescriptions in the U.S. within its first month and that phase three trial patients lost an average of 27 pounds. Skovronsky said he believes oral drugs are necessary to meet demand for obesity treatment, estimating that one billion people worldwide need such medicine but only about 20 million have been reached with injectables. He also noted that the company is investing $150 billion in facilities to produce the drug and others. Skovronsky also addressed Eli Lilly’s work on Alzheimer’s disease, saying that new diagnostic methods such as brain scans and blood tests can detect the disease before symptoms appear.
