In a November 2019 interview, Karen McKee, then president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company, discussed the role of chemical engineers in addressing global challenges. She stated that human progress is "always powered by innovation and technology" and encouraged young engineers to understand the impact they can have. McKee cited the Alliance to End Plastic Waste as an example of industry collaboration, describing it as a CEO-led initiative bringing together companies across the value chain to develop scalable solutions for plastic waste. McKee advised early-career engineers to "have the courage to really step up and make a difference" and to continue learning throughout their careers, noting that while fundamentals remain constant, much of what is learned in college becomes obsolete.
