From TIM KENTLEY-KLAY: Real world continuous learning is the future of Robotics · · CraftHub Events
“I think Tesla is definitely going to solve full autonomy and I think they're going to do it at scale and faster than anyone else because Tesla can do that and put it in their fleet which is already at scale.”
On , Tim Klay, Cofounder at Zoox, spoke about competitive landscape during TIM KENTLEY-KLAY: Real world continuous learning is the future of Robotics on CraftHub Events.
Tim Kentley-Klay, cofounder of Zoox and later founder of the robotics startup Hyper, has spoken about his belief that real-world continuous learning is the future of robotics. In a 2022 talk, he described Hyper as a next-generation autonomous mobility company developing robots that learn as they move, using a setup where a vehicle broadcasts data over a low-latency Wi-Fi mesh network to a neural network in the cloud. He stated that Hyper’s approach involves giving the vehicle real agency in its environment, rather than relying on static recorded files for training. He also said he believes Tesla will solve full autonomy at scale and faster than others, but expressed curiosity about whether Hyper’s method could achieve similar proficiency with less data. In earlier appearances, Kentley-Klay discussed Zoox’s strategy of building purpose-built, fully electric autonomous vehicles for dense urban areas, arguing that retrofitting existing cars would not suffice for the high-mileage usage of a shared fleet. He emphasized the importance of bringing in experts to address unknown risks and of testing vehicles to gather data. He also noted that autonomous technology could displace some jobs but create new ones, and that he was optimistic about the technology’s potential to improve safety and reduce emissions in cities.
