“I think the value proposition in law firms is that the amount of work is the measure of your success, but I prefer to get a hundred things done in a day rather than one thing to an A+++ level.”
On , Matthew Fawcett, Chief Legal Officer at DXC TECHNOLOGY CO, spoke about legal practice during Matt Fawcett | The Ethics Experts Podcast #217 on Ethico.
In a June 2025 episode of The Ethics Experts podcast, Matt Fawcett, general counsel of DXC Technology, discussed his approach to leading a legal and compliance team in a large, geographically dispersed company where most employees work virtually. He noted that he had not yet met some of his direct reports in person after a year in the role. Fawcett described his management philosophy as prioritizing "relationship authority" over "role authority" and said he aims to build a legal team that could operate without him, stating, "My goal is to make myself irrelevant." Fawcett also shared his views on legal department strategy, advocating for speed as a business priority and questioning traditional practices. He said he dislikes the phrase "do more with less," instead suggesting teams should focus on "how to do less and get more by prioritizing what really matters." He added that "the recipes for the future are not in the cookbooks of the past" and that forward-looking legal departments should ask "why" and "what if" to challenge the status quo. Fawcett noted that at DXC Technology, the chief ethics and compliance officer reports to him, and he expressed satisfaction with that arrangement.
