Since becoming president and CEO of AXIS Capital in May 2023, Vince Tizzio has overseen a period of significant growth and strategic repositioning. In interviews throughout 2025 and early 2026, Tizzio described the company as "thriving" and noted record production, record operating income, and a 19.2% return on equity in the first quarter of 2025. He attributed this performance to a reset underwriting strategy, a focus on culture, and investments in people, processes, and products. Tizzio stated that the company has "gone back to our roots" as an underwriting firm and that its strategy is driven by his background as a trained underwriter. He also highlighted a nearly 95% total shareholder return over the prior two years. Tizzio has frequently discussed the evolving risk landscape, citing climate change, cybersecurity, AI, social inflation, and geopolitical instability as key challenges. Regarding AI, he described it as "not merely a cyber challenge" but a technology that creates new liabilities for directors and officers, as well as new exposures for cyber insurance and other lines. He noted that AXIS Capital has created a governance council to oversee AI use and is deploying AI tools to improve efficiency, such as processing submissions. On cyber risk, Tizzio stated that ransomware attacks have more than doubled and that AI is creating new methods for perpetrators to generate claims. He also emphasized the need for "humility toward the exposure" and for businesses to stay current with infrastructure to protect against evolving threats.
