About Karl Glassman

President, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman · LEGGETT & PLATT INC

Karl Glassman, chairman and CEO of Leggett & Platt, has publicly discussed the results of a company investigation into budget mattresses sold on Amazon. Glassman stated that Leggett & Platt selected eight highly-rated mattress models sold on the platform and sent them to a certified lab for flammability testing. He reported that seven of the eight models failed the US flammability standard 16 CFR 1633, with an overall failure rate of 85% across all samples tested. Glassman said the company notified the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Amazon in July 2024, and that while the CPSC issued recalls for two mattresses, Amazon was not responsive to the company's findings. He argued that the lack of enforcement of flammability standards, particularly for imported mattresses, creates a consumer safety risk, and that the online channel lacks transparency and accountability. Glassman has also been involved in philanthropic efforts related to pancreatic cancer research through the Seena Magowitz Foundation. He has spoken at foundation events about the importance of funding research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), stating that the organization's work provides hope for patients. Glassman has served as an honorary chair for the foundation's golf classic and has described his and his wife Cathi's involvement as stemming from a sense of responsibility to help others. In a 2023 interview, Glassman reflected on his 41-year career at Leggett & Platt, noting that he began as a sales representative and that the company's culture is built on a Midwest work ethic and the development of ethical, intelligent employees. He also mentioned that he and his wife own thoroughbred racehorses.
