In a 2020 interview, UiPath cofounder Marius Tirca discussed the company's early development and the lessons he drew from it. He described a defining moment as the shift from a technology-focused company to a customer-first company. Tirca stated that many entrepreneurs from engineering backgrounds do not recognize the importance of prioritizing customers, and he said he discovered that customers were "smarter than us" and told the company what the technology needed to do. Tirca recounted a 2013 pilot in India where a prospect chose UiPath over a competitor, attributing the decision to the company's visual, flowchart-based approach versus scripting. He noted that the customer was surprised by the outcome and did not understand that it was the people UiPath sent that made the difference. Tirca also reflected on a personal low point in 2015, saying he was "on the verge of completely ruining my career" and had become "basically unemployable" after leaving Microsoft. He said the company initially did not see the full market potential for its technology, and that realizing the true scope of the market was a pivotal moment.
