Martina McIsaac, President and Chief Operating Officer of MSC Industrial Direct, discussed the company’s operations and industry challenges in interviews at the IMTS+ Creators Lounge in September 2024. She stated that MSC has 7,000 employees, 400,000 customers in North America, and a product line of 2.8 million SKUs, supporting industrial customers with metalworking, MRO needs, inventory management, and cost optimization. McIsaac noted that MSC grew to $4 billion in sales from a business that began selling tools out of a car trunk, and said the company aims to “fuel the potential of American manufacturing.” She also said that more than half of MSC’s executive leadership team are women. McIsaac addressed labor shortages in manufacturing, citing an expectation of 2.1 million unfilled jobs by 2030 and estimating that manufacturers lose about 11% of earnings due to the gap. She said MSC helps customers overcome this by optimizing purchases, supply chains, and productivity, rather than solely focusing on lower prices. McIsaac highlighted MSC’s training programs using virtual and augmented reality to bridge knowledge gaps, and noted that the company was the first to computerize inventory in industrial distribution in the 1960s. She described MSC as a “connected tissue” between innovation and the plant floor, particularly for small manufacturers with 100 employees or fewer.
