Michael Murray, CEO of Kopin Corporation, has been discussing the company's expansion into AI infrastructure through its microLED-based optical interconnect technology, Neural IO. In April 2026, Kopin announced a $15 million development order with fabric.ai for Neural IO, which Murray described as designed to address bandwidth and power consumption bottlenecks in AI data centers. He stated that the technology uses microLED pixels as high-speed optical transmitters for chip-to-chip, board-to-board, and rack-to-rack communications, and that Kopin aims to demonstrate 1.6 terabit speeds in 2026 and 3.6 terabits in 2027. Murray said Kopin is the only U.S. company with a fully operational microLED production line, which he attributed to a $15.4 million award from the Department of War. Murray also highlighted Kopin's defense business, including the Sentinel FPV first-person viewer for drones and the Soldier Borne Mission Command program, which he said could represent a $350 million to $500 million contract if Kopin is inserted with its color microLED. He noted that the U.S. government is the second largest consumer of AI GPUs, representing a $23 billion market opportunity for Kopin. Murray stated that the Neural IO chipset could be larger than Kopin's entire defense business, and that the company is targeting a $69 billion AI infrastructure communications market by 2030.
