“Over the next five to ten years you’re going to end up with, I don’t know, three to five big global players, in addition to maybe some local champions in individual markets.”
On , Jean-briac Perrette, President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Streaming & Games at Warner Bros Discovery Inc, spoke about market structure during APOS 2023 Highlights | JB Perrette, CEO & President Global Streaming & Games, Warner Bros. Discovery on APOS.
At the APOS 2023 conference, Jean-Briac Perrette discussed the state of the streaming industry and Warner Bros. Discovery's strategy. He stated that the industry is moving from a period of "great oversupply and underpricing" to one of "rationalization" and "great reaggregation," which he described as involving both structural consolidation and rebundling through partnerships. Perrette said pricing rationalization is beginning after what he called a "content oversupply bender." He outlined a rollout plan for the company's Max streaming platform, including Latin America in the first quarter of 2024, Europe before the Paris Olympics, existing Asian markets by the end of 2024, and new markets starting in 2025. Perrette noted that Warner Bros. Discovery is not focused on being the largest by scale, and that the company may decide not to launch in markets like India if they are uneconomical due to low average revenue per user (ARPU) or oversaturation. He described Australia as a "critically important market" with a long partnership with Foxtel. Perrette expressed a belief in the power of local content and the potential to partner with local producers to originate local IP using franchises like DC. When asked to name the three to five global players he predicted would remain in the space, Perrette declined, saying he is focused on his own company and its goal of being "in that last group standing."
