Lee Tillman, chairman, president and CEO of Marathon Oil, has continued to lead the company through a period focused on capital discipline, shareholder returns, and operational efficiency. In the company's Q1 2024 earnings call, Tillman stated that Marathon Oil was on track to deliver a business plan that "benchmarks at the top of the E&P sector" on free cash flow generation, capital efficiency, and shareholder returns. He reported that the company returned 41% of its cash flow from operations to investors in the first quarter and expected to generate $2.2 billion in free cash flow for the year. Tillman also highlighted improvements in capital efficiency through extended lateral drilling, noting that about 25% of first-quarter wells to sales were three-mile laterals. Regarding the company's integrated global gas business, he noted that Marathon Oil had transitioned to marketing its own share of Alba LNG directly into the global market, realizing global LNG pricing. In a separate public appearance, Tillman delivered a TEDx talk in Doncaster, UK, in which he discussed the concept of "place-based public service" as a means to foster community flourishing. Drawing on personal experiences, including a childhood memory of a teacher's demeaning comment, Tillman argued that a sense of connection, purpose, and agency are key to human flourishing. He described service as being "like a gardener" and encouraged individuals to take small actions in their communities, stating that "place-based public service is the shortest thing and the best thing we can do to take us from the world that we now live in to the flourishing world we want to create."
