Mikael Dolsten, former Chief Scientific Officer and President of Worldwide Research, Development and Medical at Pfizer, has discussed his views on the relationship between science and society. He stated that science should be separate from politics and that scientists need to argue for science, particularly in the face of anti-vaccine movements and misinformation. Dolsten also commented on the transition from academia to industry, saying that in the past it was seen as a continuum with a shared purpose, unlike the more contentious relationship he perceives today. Dolsten has reflected on his tenure at Pfizer, noting that during his 16-year career there, he secured 36 medicine and vaccine approvals and advanced over 150 drug candidates to clinical trials. He described the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, stating that Pfizer used company resources without taxpayer money and that the company made early decisions to start clinical trials and launch large-scale manufacturing. He also discussed the development of Paxlovid, which he said reduced hospitalization and death from COVID-19 by 90%. Dolsten currently serves on the boards of several companies, including Agilent Technologies and Rocket Pharmaceuticals, and on the private company boards for ImmuneAI, Fair Journey Biologics, Orbit Medicine, and Orgen Therapeutics.
