Ignacio Álvarez, CEO of Popular Inc., has discussed Puerto Rico’s economic outlook and the bank’s role in the community. He stated that Puerto Rico’s economy will grow between 1 and 1.5 percent for the next five or six years, describing the growth as stable but not transformative. Álvarez identified the administrative capacity of the state to manage federal funds, the education system, and housing affordability as key challenges. He noted that increasing the island’s labor participation rate from roughly 42 percent to 50 or 55 percent would have a greater economic impact than federal funds. Álvarez also said that Popular extended paid maternity leave to four months with full pay, and that a year later 97 percent of women returned to work, compared to 80 percent before. In interviews, Álvarez has also spoken about his personal background and the values guiding his leadership. He described himself as a lawyer and former law professor rather than a banker by profession, and said that as CEO he sees himself as a player-coach building a team and developing strategy. He stated that the legacy he wants to leave is being seen as a good husband and father who sets a good example. Álvarez also discussed Monipol, a community fundraising platform he helped create, saying its core purpose is helping others and that it relies on community trust rather than marketing. He emphasized that the platform avoids promoting trends that do not align with its fundamental mission.
