In an April 2020 video message, Kroger Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Tim Massa announced a "hero bonus" for the company's frontline associates. Massa stated that the bonus, described as a $2 per hour premium above the standard wage, would apply to hours worked between March 29 and April 18, 2020, and be paid on a weekly basis. He characterized the bonus as a further acknowledgment of associates' work during the COVID-19 pandemic, following an earlier appreciation bonus. Massa expressed pride in Kroger associates and thanked them for their dedication, saying they had shown "the true meaning of the word hero." He stated that the company would "continue to work tirelessly to support you and your families" and that Kroger cares about associates' "physical, your financial and importantly your emotional well-being."
