In 2018, Robert Qutub, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at RenaissanceRe, received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UNC Charlotte. Qutub, who earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the university, said he was "very grateful for the award" and described it as "a tremendous honor to be recognized in a public way." He noted that he has worked for four companies over 30 years and started in public accounting, which he described as "a really fast way to understand management and how companies operate." Qutub said that giving back is important to him, stating that "UNCC gave me a lot and I have no problem giving back." He and his wife Katie established a scholarship for accounting students. Qutub also cited his service in the Marine Corps and his decision to attend UNC Charlotte as the two most defining things in his life, aside from his family. He said the Marine Corps gave him "focus and discipline," and that learning from failures and having "grit" has helped him throughout his career.
