About Christopher Littlefield
In a 2012 TEDxBeirut talk, Christopher Littlefield discussed the role of recognition in daily life. He stated that "we love recognition, but we suck at it," and described people as "horrible about giving it" and "suck at receiving it." Littlefield argued that a compliment followed by a "but" is not a compliment, and that such behavior constitutes manipulation rather than recognition. He encouraged listeners to ask others, "What do you want to be acknowledged for?" and to listen to the response, noting that people often want acknowledgment for the challenges they overcame rather than the result itself. Littlefield also addressed the tendency to focus on the gap between an envisioned outcome and the actual result, saying, "If we only focus on the gap, that's how we go crazy." He suggested giving up the idea that "someone else's success is our failure." He advised that even when frustrated or angry, offering acknowledgment can make a significant difference, and recommended simply saying "thank you" when receiving a compliment, even if one disagrees with it.
