Street researcher and consultant Christopher Littlefield exposes our hidden relationship to recognition in this lively and eye-opening talk. He discusses how we actually aren't very good at accepting compliments and often we don't even know it. He exposes the crazy ways we manipulate others with recognition and the profound difference a simple compliment can make in someone's life. Christopher asks us to rethink our relationship to recognition starting by asking others the question "What do you want to be acknowledged for?" ‪Through this question, he helps us realize that most of the time we don't actually want to be acknowledged for the result, but for all the ups and downs, the challenges and barriers, we overcame to produce the result. Christopher Littlefield is the founder of AcknowledgmentWorks a training and consulting firm that is committed to transforming the way that people work together. About Christopher Littlefield

President of Retirement & Income Solutions · Principal Financial Group Inc

In a 2012 TEDxBeirut talk, Christopher Littlefield discussed the role of recognition in daily life. He stated that "we love recognition, but we suck at it," and described people as "horrible about giving it" and "suck at receiving it." Littlefield argued that a compliment followed by a "but" is not a compliment, and that such behavior constitutes manipulation rather than recognition. He encouraged listeners to ask others, "What do you want to be acknowledged for?" and to listen to the response, noting that people often want acknowledgment for the challenges they overcame rather than the result itself. Littlefield also addressed the tendency to focus on the gap between an envisioned outcome and the actual result, saying, "If we only focus on the gap, that's how we go crazy." He suggested giving up the idea that "someone else's success is our failure." He advised that even when frustrated or angry, offering acknowledgment can make a significant difference, and recommended simply saying "thank you" when receiving a compliment, even if one disagrees with it.
