Walsh stated that the U.S. coal industry, working with the Republican Party, turned what he described as an economic issue into a culture war. He said the framing was not about utilities comparing the price of natural gas versus coal, but rather about the Democratic Party and "cosmopolitan elites" being portrayed as trying to destroy a way of life. Walsh added that he suspected this formula has been used in Alberta and other parts of Canada.
