At the Semicon India conference on July 28, 2023, Prabu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials, stated that "this is India's time to shine" and that the country is "poised to play a central role in the global semiconductor industry." He attributed this potential to "the strong vision of Prime Minister Modi to develop manufacturing." Raja noted that "semiconductor chips are everywhere" and that "countries have realized that semiconductors are vital for economic and national security," adding that "the technology challenges of today are so large that no one can do it alone." Raja announced that Applied Materials, which has operated in India for over 20 years, plans to build a new collaborative engineering center in the country. He said the center will bring together the company's engineering talent, 25 global suppliers, five domestic suppliers, and top Indian universities to accelerate the commercialization of new semiconductor equipment technology. Raja expressed the view that this collaboration model "could serve as a catalyst for the training and development of future semiconductor talent, leading to many new jobs in engineering and manufacturing."
