“You're far more likely to become CEO operating in small organizations than you are sitting in big organizations. If I'd stayed in Amazon I would definitively not be chief executive.”
On , Andy Lightfoot, Chief Executive Officer of Space NK at Ulta Beauty, spoke about career strategy during SHORTS | Can You Make Your Own Luck? with Andy Lightfoot on Ben Morton Leadership. Your Leadership Coach..
In a July 2023 podcast appearance, Andy Lightfoot discussed the role of luck in career progression. He stated that he has "been incredibly lucky" and that becoming a CEO involves "a huge amount of luck," adding that many others have the requisite talent and skills but that being in the "right place, right time" with the "right sponsor" is a significant factor. Lightfoot also said that "you're far more likely to become CEO operating in small organizations than you are sitting in big organizations," and that if he had stayed at Amazon he would "definitively not be chief executive." Lightfoot reflected on his own career, noting that he wanted to be a chief executive by age 40 and achieved that goal at 37. He said that he progressed most when he "relaxed a bit" about his ambition, as being "super ambitious and super hungry for promotions" was not yielding results. He agreed with the framing that "luck is where preparedness meets opportunity," stating that while one still needs an opportunity to arise, being ready to take it is key.
