0:00And what are you targeting with the Punch right now?
4:46Ah, what is the next step according to you for the buyers now?
6:51So, how is that competition in your eye right now?
Well, what does an electric vehicle price at 6.5 lakhs and 9.69 lakh? You can take your pick because you get two options now with the Tata Punch EV. This is the biggest launch of Tata Motors in 2026 and now being joined by Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. Sir, thanks so much for joining in and you know many congratulations on the launch. Ah we met just very recently about a month ago on the ICE launch of the Tata Punch. The EV definitely came in a lot sooner than what personally I was expecting. How do you see the launch in that sense because the earlier Tata Punch the first version came back just in 2024 so not been that long. So what was the rationale of the first of the launch essentially at this point of time? And what are you targeting with the Punch right now?
See, if you see the entry EVs, the entry EVs when I say it, are the cars which are less than ₹12 lakhs. And why we have taken that ₹12 lakh? Because 65% of the vehicles, cars in the country get sold below ₹12 lakh, which means nearly 33 lakh vehicles are being sold in that segment. Electric vehicles are being only sold 500,000.
Which is only 1.6% penetration, whereas in greater than 12 lakh, electric vehicle penetration is 10%. So we saw that entry segment was facing this challenge of low penetration. And if you don't penetrate electric vehicles in 65% of the market, then there is no adoption of electric vehicles in the country. And therefore in these two years, a lot has happened on the cost side. We have been seeing the battery prices have come down. The cell prices have come down. The design innovations have increased. The scale and localization has been helping reduce the cost. So we said if we are getting these benefits on the cost side, why not move towards what a customer desires? What a customer desires? They require at least a car which can do intercity drives and not just city drives. A car which gives you comfort of lifetime warranty. A car which can charge fast as you are on the highway, you don't want to waste too much time on the highway. So I took these three briefs and said let us see if we can push the current range of a Punch from 250 km to 350 km, provide lifetime warranty at the same time, bring the cost very compelling.
Hmm, right. So you have seen that we have launched the car at ₹9.69. We have also given a base option at 6.49. And with 350 km range, with lifetime warranty. Fast charging which this car can do a top up for 135 km in 15 minutes. Ah, I think you have now been able to package a solution which gives that peace of mind to the customer to go for electric vehicle. And if you really compare the on-road prices of an automatic CNG Punch for example, and a car of this category, it is on par with it now. Yeah, so therefore it's a very viable option now and that's the reason why we said that.
Since in any case, the ICE version has been launched. There is already a strong momentum. There is a lot of work that we have done there. So we bring it as first as form possible.
Yeah. The other advantage that because you know Punch launched in 2021 has been a big success for you after the Nexon, so since then the 2024 EV launched, the ICE launch in 2026 and now this, so it has been a step up I am sure in terms of design because we have seen all four have very distinct design and now all of them come together. So in that sense when we talk about pricing and 9.69 lakhs, ah, talk to us about why is it so important to price it at that level and also that if you are running some offers for those who bought in 2024 the first version, for them to quickly revive to the second one.
See, the rationale of the pricing was, as I said, that it has to come closer to the ICE prices. Automatic cars of the same size and in the same category. So as I said, 9.69 is more or less when you calculate the on-road price you will see versus CNG, more or less it is the same in terms of on-road price when you take the MT version. Hmm.
And yes, to some of the earlier customers, you know, we have been trying to offer different kind of schemes and all those are ongoing schemes. And you know, some of the electric vehicles, you know, customers are buying that depends on model to model.
That's it. The big part of the launch and because you know and explicitly mentioned by management was, ah, first and primary car. Now, a lot of what we spoken to you as well that EVs is becoming the secondary car now and you spoke about so many measures that you done in terms of the adoption, hopefully this can become the first car now. Ah, how is the buyer mindset evolved now in the last few years? Given that a lot of the challenges on charging infra and something that you spoke about of over 20,000 public chargers available now. Ah, what is the next step according to you for the buyers now?
