George, thank you for the introduction and the plug for my book Zero to One. I'm going to offer three contrarian ideas for the future of technology and computers, woven into a review of George Gilder's Life After Google. First, the pendulum of computer age visions has swung from centralization in 1969 to decentralization in 1999, and now back to centralization. The contrarian view is that it will swing back to decentralization, with more privacy and less Google-like control. Second, I argue that technological progress is slower than advertised. The world of bits advanced quickly, but atoms lagged, and even bits decelerate; we face stagnation, and Silicon Valley's narrative of the future has faded. Third, technology is about people, not deterministic forces. Human agency matters. Life after Google means life goes on, and we should bet on the indomitable human spirit.
