9:02President, if you could go back to your student years and add one subject to your curriculum, what would it be?
I started in the third grade of primary school, so I was about 8 or 9 years old, and I studied at a music school in Bydgoszcz. Then I moved, thanks to the foundation, to a music school in Warsaw, and this year I've just started my bachelor's at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.
At first, I wanted to play the piano because my older brother played it. I wanted to follow in his footsteps, like younger siblings do. But when I went to an open day at the music school, I also saw other instruments there, and I don't know what it was about the cello. It must have been love at first sight, because I dragged my mom back to that room three more times. And then during the entrance exams, I simply said I wanted to play the cello.
Than string instruments. I can't say anything about wind instruments, because I've never had the chance to play them. But with the piano, when you press a key, you immediately get a sound. Right. With string instruments, unfortunately, you have to learn how to produce the sound, and do it nicely and cleanly. That's the biggest challenge, especially for very young children.
That's true. Is music for you a form of relaxation or meditation, or is it a way of expressing yourself and your emotions? Very often, when I observe musicians, I see that they don't just play—they express emotions with their whole being. What is it for you? What does music mean to you?
