What Scott Bessent said

Written from the verified transcript and checked against it. Every figure links to the moment it was said.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the G20 agenda, emphasizing American leadership, growth, deregulation, technology, and energy security. He highlighted the deal for 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil, framing it as fostering Western Hemisphere energy security and following support for Argentina's Milei government. On the economy, Bessent said real weekly earnings in Western North Carolina have recovered under President Trump, with $5 billion in federal aid post-Helene, and predicted energy prices will fall after the Iran conflict. He cited 'economic D-Day' with Treasury, State, and DOD spreading globally to clamp down on Iran, and tied the doubled maximum bond buyback to elevated borrowing from AI buildout, with productivity gains expected in six months. Bessent praised AI's impact on small business formation, mentioned 300+ media outlets in Asheville, and contrasted current real wage increases with 21.5% inflation under Biden.

  6. 7:53Swannanoa was hit pretty hard, not like Bat Cave that you mentioned, and he promised the people there that he would help them build and to build better than what had been there before. Is that happening?

G20, what are the objectives of this gathering right now?
Scott Bessent 0:06 ↗
So, it's a gathering of 20 of the biggest economies in the world and some of the multilateral development banks and some other organizations. We want to emphasize a couple of things: American leadership and a growth agenda. We want to show that the US has the most substantial growth and the strongest growth amongst our peers, and we want to encourage the other countries to take the measures, whether it's deregulation, embracing technology, or embracing energy security, that will bring them along. We also have several work streams that we're doing. We're going to talk about the financial system, big banks and small banks. We are going to talk about global imbalances. We're going to talk about sovereign debt, especially in a lot of the emerging markets that are struggling.
Interviewer 1:02 ↗
That's a lot on your agenda.
Scott Bessent 1:04 ↗
We come to work. I know the dueling pianos here at the Grove Park Inn are famous in the evening, so everyone can have a break at 10:00 with the dueling pianos.
Interviewer 1:19 ↗
That's a good call. That's a good call. Let me ask you, on Friday, the president announced a deal for control of 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil in partnership with a private Venezuelan company. Is this an example of the kind of fostering global growth you're talking about?
Scott Bessent 1:36 ↗
Well, look, I think that this is something else. This is more fostering the Western Hemisphere, which we have seen under President Trump. I think it started with this administration's support of the Milei government in Argentina, and then Venezuela is finding its way out of a very dark period of time. We are seeing many of the far-left governments—now the people are voting in more market-based governments, whether it's Chile has come back, Colombia, Ecuador. So we're seeing a big move, and this is energy security for Americans, 65 billion barrels.
Interviewer 2:25 ↗
Yeah, that's what I was going to ask. Like energy resilience, which is one of your goals.
Scott Bessent 2:29 ↗
Yes.
Interviewer 2:30 ↗
For us, but also Venezuela.
Scott Bessent 2:32 ↗
Yeah, look, I mean, Venezuela is a rich country, and we should look back to the pre-Chávez days. It was the place to be in the '60s, '70s, even '80s and '90s. And then you see what bad leadership does.
Interviewer 2:54 ↗
Yeah, absolutely. I did interview Hugo Chávez back in the day, so, yeah, that's a whole other story. Let me ask you, your focus is growth globally and locally. How will this affect local business, manufacturing, construction? If you grow the large economy, does it grow this economy, too?
Scott Bessent 3:12 ↗
Well, look, the president's made it clear that he wants to bring back precision manufacturing to the US. And I think the event here—there's a portion that goes directly into the economy via spending, but there's a lot of, as you all know better than anyone, earned media and the exposure on the global stage for Asheville. I grew up coming to this area, still have a house about an hour away, and I think that this is one of the great underreported gems of the US. Americans know about it, but the international stage doesn't. If you think back, Miami was a nice place to go to the beach, but when they got Art Basel, then it leapt to the international stage. So I think that we could see a lot of people who, if you're sitting in Germany or Japan, you're going to want to come to Asheville.
Interviewer 4:10 ↗
Right, because a lot of eyeballs are going to be on Western North Carolina.
Scott Bessent 4:13 ↗
Yeah, we've got more than 300 media outlets here.
Interviewer 4:17 ↗
Right. And for your comparison to Miami, sometimes when that happens, it doesn't go back.
Scott Bessent 4:22 ↗
Yep.
Interviewer 4:22 ↗
Yeah. So there is an opportunity to affect local business, construction, wealth in this area.
Scott Bessent 4:28 ↗
Oh, yeah.
Interviewer 4:28 ↗
Let me ask you, because I was going to ask you why Asheville. On that note, real weekly earnings in Western North Carolina have fallen since Helene hit. You're suggesting that will help turn that around.
