Amar Doman, Chairman and CEO of Doman Building Materials Group and owner of the BC Lions, discussed his team's 6-6 record, injuries, and a five-game win streak. He said Montreal's clinched playoff spot may lower their incentive in the rematch. Doman confirmed no concert this year due to paying off a Kelowna loan and FIFA displacement, but promised a big event next year. He expressed ongoing interest in purchasing BC Place despite the government's refusal, citing benefits like practices, offices, and upgrades. He mentioned possible collaboration with the Whitecaps on a shared stadium but noted land and zoning challenges. He praised the sold-out Kelowna games, suggesting an intimate stadium of 30-35,000 seats. He discussed the Surrey rink not affecting his practice facility, seeking a 10-year lease to upgrade it. He promoted the first-ever tailgate at Plaza of Nations and the Driven Project supercar event.

  5. The CEO confirmed Montreal has clinched a playoff spot, lowering their incentive in the rematch.

Rick, the Lions back at home at BC Place tomorrow to take on the Montreal Alouettes. A rematch, of course, of what went down last weekend for the Lions out in Montreal. We're joined now by BC Lions owner, friend of the program, Amar Doman. Amar, thanks for doing this today. How are you?
Amar Doman 0:57 ↗
Hey, good to see you guys. Thanks for having me.
Host 0:59 ↗
So, your team, Amar, six and six. What have you thought of their performance through 12 games?
Amar Doman 1:05 ↗
Yeah, no excuses. We had some injuries though early and just weren't in the rhythm and we started to roll. We got five in a row. Of course, we started one and five and then six and five. Montreal just, you know, were too tough for us last week, but I think we're going to have a nice game this weekend here tomorrow.
Host 1:23 ↗
It's a bit of a cliché, but isn't it nice to be able to get a rematch against a team that just beat you a week ago so quickly?
Amar Doman 1:30 ↗
It is, you know, and I think the team will be looking for redemption and, you know, Montreal's already clinched a spot, so their incentives may be a little lower than ours. We certainly, you know, need to win these games and want to push ourselves up higher in the West and it is just crowded kind of below Edmonton, so we've got to earn our way out of here.
Host 1:49 ↗
Amar, no concert this year. No concert. Is it coming back next year?
Amar Doman 1:54 ↗
Well, so can pay off the loan that we had to do for Kelowna, Rick.
Host 1:57 ↗
[laughter]
Amar Doman 1:58 ↗
You know, but look, you definitely next year 100% and, you know, we were displaced because of FIFA. So next year we'll have a big bang. There's no question about it.
Host 2:06 ↗
All right. Make sure you talk to us here before.
Amar Doman 2:10 ↗
We'll be consulting.
Host 2:12 ↗
[laughter] AC/DC was here last a couple weeks ago. I went, okay, listen, Amar, this summer you submitted a formal letter of intent to purchase BC Place. You were told then it's not for sale. Where is that now? Where's that right now?
Amar Doman 2:27 ↗
Yeah, you know, we're still trying to get into a dialogue with the government. The premier has come out and the minister and said now that the asset isn't for sale. You know, we'd like to still continue those discussions and, you know, we just believe it shouldn't be, you know, in Crown's hands. We think that ourselves could manage it well under ownership and really give it, you know, a little bit more direction. I think that a lot of these assets, in fact, probably 95% of them are private and we're in kind of the 5% club and, you know, we just think we can enhance it and do better with the asset with a different focus. So we'd love that opportunity and we're still trying for that opportunity to see if we can, you know, at least get to a conversation that's more meaningful on it because we'd like to own it for the long term and run it for the right reasons and really build something there special. So and be home of the Lions forever. I'd love that.
