Joseph Gebbia, Airbnb co-founder and Chief Design Officer of the United States, discussed the launch of President Trump's America by Design initiative, which aims to overhaul 29,000 government websites into a single, user-friendly portal. He described the effort as a 'concierge' for navigating government services, emphasizing a shift from websites to conversational AI-driven interactions. Gebbia highlighted a prior success: digitizing the federal retirement process, which had been attempted for 20 years and cost $100 million without results; his team completed it in six months, reducing processing time from six months to 60 seconds for 100,000 annual users. He addressed privacy concerns, stating the tool is 'private by design' with no tracking and no login required. Gebbia outlined upcoming features, including job searches and UFO file access, with transactional capabilities like Medicare enrollment and passport services planned by 2027. He praised Peter Arnell's branding work and defended DOGE's savings, noting $215 billion in actual savings against a $2 trillion goal.

0:51Tell us how big a deal it is, 29,000 websites?
3:17You can certainly kind of see all things of the federal government but over time you have this mission that people can interact with federal government?
4:33Eventually you'll be able to get your passport through it?
4:46You know, what's the back end of this? Are you taking my data?
6:10What is it like working with Peter and his branding?
7:06What do you say to the folks who look back and say, why did he do it?
It's time to upgrade the digital surface of the U.S. government to something we can all be proud of, something that can save us time, something that's highly usable. There is absolutely no reason why the U.S. government can't be as delightful and satisfying and easy to use as your favorite consumer app.
That was back at the end of May. Tonight we'll discuss the launch of President Trump's new America by Design initiative, an effort to overhaul thousands of government websites and make services faster and accessible. Join us for an exclusive interview. Joe -- Chief Design Officer of the United States, what a title, Joe.
The government websites have sprawled to 29,000 and it puts the burden on the American to figure out how to navigate the government. So President Trump cares about this and, you know, he's a builder, he's a hospitality guy. He loves to fix things, and you can think of this as really, this is like a concierge to navigate the government.
We should point out, you're the co-founder of Airbnb. Got involved with DOGE, wanted to make things better, and, in fact, we talked when I did the big DOGE interview, and I'll play a piece of that besides Elon, you're one of several billionaires here, co-founder of Airbnb. And you wanted to help out.
Help out to fix retirement in the government, I loved the challenge so I jumped on-board and it turns out, there is a mine in Pennsylvania that houses every paper document for the retirement process in the government. It's an injustice to civil servants. We really believe that the government can have an Apple Store-like experience. Beautifully designed. Great user experience and modern systems.
That's right. The government had been trying to do for upwards of 20 years. A hundred million for nothing that came to fruition. In six months, I recruited folks from Silicon Valley and we brought retirement online. A hundred thousand people per year go through the process. It's entirely digital. Instead of six months it takes 60 seconds.
And all the paperwork is shredded and done. If it launches tomorrow you're not worried that this thing crashes all at once like we saw in the early days of the Obamacare effort.
Airbnb, our biggest night is all New Year's Eve. Millions of people checking into Airbnbs. We came from industry and have experience with this stuff and great partners on the back, in Grok, and Gemini.
You can certainly kind of see all things of the federal government but over time you have this mission that people can interact with federal government?
Don't think of it as a website. It's more of a conversation that you start with the government to try to get the answers that you need. It cuts across multiple agencies. The answer is just for you, gives you clear next steps and it's only from official sources so there is no chance of information being outdated like on some third party websites and there are no ads.
Starting tomorrow you'll be able to search for information, search for jobs, one of the latest UFO files in the government, and coming in the months to come, into 2027, the ability to actually do things and action them all in one place.
