“Comparing Putin to Hitler Is Shameful”: Fico Revolts Against EU’s $140bn Ukraine Plan | APT

📅 Dec 17, 2025 APT 8 MIN 1613 VIEWS 17 SEGMENTS · 1 SPEAKERS
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has vowed to vote against any European Union plan to use frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine, warning the move would escalate the war and undermine peace efforts. Ahead of the European Council summit, Fico sharply criticised EU leaders pushing a $140 billion reparations-style loan for Kyiv and condemned German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for comparing Russian President Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler, calling the remarks “very unfortunate,” especially coming from a German leader. Fico insisted frozen assets should be part of future peace negotiations and rec...

I hope I am sufficiently visible and clear about my positions. And I will not change those positions. That means I will not support, at tomorrow's European Council meeting, any solution that would lead to providing a military loan to Ukraine. None. I have had the opportunity to exchange quite a lot of information in recent times about the number of casualties in this conflict.
These are incredible numbers. And I ask myself, why must several hundred to a thousand people die every day? Why? When we know perfectly well that it leads nowhere. Absolutely nowhere.
I am shocked at how some representatives of the European Union threw a spanner in the works of the American president's peace negotiations. I am shocked at how they want to decide very quickly tomorrow about frozen Russian assets, just so that the frozen Russian assets do not become part of the peace agreement. Because the frozen Russian assets should be part of the peace agreement and should be used, on the basis of mutual agreement, primarily for the reconstruction of Ukraine itself. But as Prime Minister, I will not support any scheme — whether it is frozen assets or anything else — that would lead to further support for the war.
You can evaluate it however you like, but putting money into the war in Ukraine tomorrow means prolonging the war. And that is what those spanners in the works are doing to the peace plan proposed by the American president. I will not change my position on this, so they know about it. I wrote an open letter — you have all had the opportunity to read it. The President of the European Council knows about it, all the prime ministers and presidents who attend the European Council know about it. And for that reason I cannot even tell you where we stand, because we discussed it this morning with the state secretary. The European Union has no solution. Not yet.
I think the most ideal solution is that whoever wants to give Ukraine money, let them. Everyone has the right to do that. I cannot criticize Germany, France, or anyone else who wants to provide money for the war — if they do, they do. I cannot prevent that. But it cannot be some European plan for continuing the war. It must be a European plan primarily for peace negotiations.
The migration pact is badly made. We had clear positions and clear stances on it. I can only repeat to you that this is what kind of solidarity, when they tell you that either you pay money or you take in some person. What is that? That is blackmail. That is not solidarity. I think the states know what they have to do.
States know that if they want to, they can build a hospital in a country that we consider a country from which some migrants come. We can build schools, we can do anything.
As long as I am Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, I will never agree to any quotas, to any influx of migrants onto the territory of the Slovak Republic. That is all I can say. And we have clearly stood against the migration pact.
It is hard to please you. I go to China, I am a Chinese agent. I go to Moscow, I am a Russian agent. We talk with the American president, I am an American agent. I even met with Merz recently in Brussels, and he will probably come here. Then I am probably a German agent. I met with the South African president. I am probably a South African agent. You don't even know — I was there in 1994 at the elections, when Mandela won the elections for the first time. It is hard to please you?
You know, if I did not see the double standard that you are introducing here, it is unbelievable. The Amazons from Progressive Slovakia — where were you when prosecutor Špirko was involved? Where were you? He beat a woman like wheat. The Amazons from Progressive Slovakia. Where were you? Where were you? But I am talking about a double standard.
I am talking about — well, you see, suddenly it bothers you, doesn't it? But what kind of yardstick? But why? Don't shout at me. You asked me a question. I am answering it. Fine. Once again. So I just want to say that you cannot introduce a double standard. You only like certain things. If someone deviates from that, they are automatically bad. And what now, like — otherwise it is amazing that I had some letter from the American president timed. That is really how he works. I will call him in Florida. Hi, Donald, what are you doing? No, won't you send me a letter? Because right now I need exactly that. I am going to the integration committee. I am going to Brussels. So please, send me a letter. Please come to your senses.
But once again. We are talking about cooperation in nuclear energy. If you noticed, the main reason for our meeting is supposed to be primarily an assessment of the signing of the intergovernmental agreement between Slovakia and the United States on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. So should we build that with the Russians? Well, you see, and here we are.
Well, that is a catastrophe. I can tell you that. So then what — you claim that nothing needs to be done. I understand that you have built 1,800 windmills here, which of course would not have helped anyone. We need nuclear and we want to diversify. We have no other option at this moment. We have taken steps in relation to South Korea. South Korea withdrew from the cooperation because it wants to cooperate with Westinghouse, and now we are working on cooperation. But to accuse me that I arranged some letter from Trump — my God, I understand that you are nervous about everything. I understand that you are completely nervous about everything. Please, it is already Christmas. Just give it a rest for a while. What is this? What nonsense is this? What are you spreading here?
These are normal Russian interests, American interests, and you forget about European interests. That is what he is saying. I am primarily — and I assure you, Madam Member of Parliament — I am primarily the Prime Minister of Slovakia, and the fact that, unlike you, we are pursuing a sovereign Slovak policy that brings results, that is exactly what we wanted. And I will keep doing that. That means it is my duty to work in all four directions. And I will keep doing that. I look forward to the visit of the German Federal Chancellor.
I will say it openly here. You think that I am ashamed to say something. I consider his statements, when he compares Putin to Hitler, to be very unfortunate. Very unfortunate. And above all, when it comes from the mouth of the German Federal Chancellor. Come on, let us be a little proud too. Let us have the courage to name things, and I am naming them.
And I think, and I repeat it again, that some leaders in the European Union are not happy that there are some peace negotiations here, and we should really think about how we function, since the British Prime Minister has become a leader in the European Union. Because that is how it is. Look at our degree of seriousness. The so-called minister of European or foreign affairs of Europe — we are talking about the High Representative — comes to the United States. Nobody there will receive her. Please, don't you want to see what the atmosphere is like. Simply put, we have no seriousness as a European Union. And you are bombarding me here that I am of course to blame.
Here Mr. Šímečka the younger is saying that the Slovak economy is dragging down the entire European economy. Yes, he is still nodding. Of course that is true. One says this, another says that. Come on, don't be crazy, be a little realistic.
