What Whitney Herd said
Written from the verified transcript and checked against it. Every figure links to the moment it was said.
Whitney Herd, founder and CEO of Bumble, said the dating industry trained people into a mindset of abundance, which she considers a harmful side effect. She started Bumble to give women control over their dating lives, after leaving Tinder and facing media scrutiny. Herd advised against rushing to achieve success by 30, noting she was on the Forbes 30 Under 30 cover twice but that it didn't matter. She recounted refusing to ring the IPO bell unless she could hold her son, illustrating her principle that adults don't always know best and you must stay true to yourself. On starting over, she suggested preserving what works from past efforts, like relationships and skills, rather than starting from scratch. She said success didn't bring the happiness she expected, and she now urges people to strive to feel alive and connected, not acclaimed.

0:00What behavior did the dating industry train into people that you think needs to be untrained?
1:49Or did they pause at some obscure point where like the tornado is hitting and like everything is ending and there's like divorces and companies are failing and like everything is objectively upside down?
Abundance. I do think abundance is a bad side effect of what we have done with very, very good intentions. Literally, I started this company, Bumble, for really only one reason, which was to give women control over their dating lives. There was no other dog in the fight. Frankly, it was a brutal experience. I had just left Tinder. I was in the media. They had called me Gone Girl. Honestly, for as much as I love my dear friend Ree, I'm so mad that that stupid movie came out the same summer as my lawsuit because it ruined my life for like several years because there was a comparison where they're like, 'She's the Gone Girl of tech and this and that.' So, it would have been so easy for me to start a juice bar and just make carrot juices all day, which was actually like maybe what I'm going to do next. But I had this deep, profound calling inside my bones, in my soul to go and fix this problem that I felt like we as women were dealing with, which was dating. And the fact that it doesn't seem to have improved all of these years later, I'm like, put me in coach, going back to work. Like, job's not done. And so I think like really what drives me is less of am I having fun or is this, you know, bringing me day-to-day excitement, but more of is the problem solved yet?
How do you deal with setbacks? How do you deal with, you know, overcoming challenges and what kind of mindset would you maybe offer to those people that are maybe going through it right now? If someone were to pause your movie right now, can you honestly say it's over? Was that the end of the movie? Or did they pause at some obscure point where like the tornado is hitting and like everything is ending and there's like divorces and companies are failing and like everything is objectively upside down? Like maybe that's just the moment in the movie right now.
And that's what I like to keep reminding myself of because I have been through so many high highs and so many really low lows. But I always ask myself at the end of the day like, is this the end? Because if it's not the end, then who cares? This thing could play out extraordinarily well. Your 20s are not the only decade that you can build in. I think when you are super young, 18, 22, you're like, 'Oh, I got to do it all by 30.' And there's that famous list, the Forbes 30 Under 30. I was on the cover twice. Not joking. But who cares? Like, by 30, who cares? Like, you can start any time. And there is no perfect number. There's no award you're going to get at the end of life that was like, 'Bravo, you did it by 30,' like you get to go to heaven. Like that's not how this works. So I do think like my big message is don't be in such a rush because the things that exist in your 20s and your 30s that are — sorry for the like company, public company jargon — like proprietary. They're not building a company. They are being together with your friends. They're going on that obscure road trip on the, you know, random Friday afternoon. It's blowing your bank account on that stupid purse you wanted. You're going to be okay and you will come back from it. You do not need to go be some like boss by 30.
