What Dana White said

Written from the verified transcript and checked against it. Every figure links to the moment it was said.

Dana White, independent director of Meta Platforms, reviewed the fights from Contender Series Week 7 and awarded UFC contracts to several fighters. He started with Damian Pivar, congratulating him on a first-round knockout. He then noted that Callum Connor and Pierro Walup were both in the hospital after their fight, calling it a fight-of-the-year contender and signing both despite neither winning. He also signed Marcos Degley, praising his submission and 13-fight win streak. He signed Ali Duy and Jaden Ortega, acknowledging Ortega's heart despite the loss. He declined to sign Norbert Noveni Jr., saying he didn't see enough to offer him a contract. White explained his decision to sign two losers, citing the fighters' heart, the record-breaking number of punches, and a recommendation from matchmaker Sean Shelby.

Key takeaways

  1. White signed both Callum Connor and Pierro Walup after their fight, despite both losing.
  2. White signed Jaden Ortega despite his loss, after matchmaker Sean Shelby recommended it.
  3. White declined Norbert Noveni Jr., saying he didn't see enough to warrant a UFC contract.
  4. Connor and Walup's fight broke a UFC record for punches landed, per White.

  2. 15:17He was putting it on you in that first round. And what do you do?

and Cassua. Both men 29 years old. Pivar with a pretty significant height advantage, but the reach advantage goes to the plus 115 dog, Cassua. Herb Dean, our referee for our first fight of the night.
Herb Dean 0:19 ↗
Ready? Ready to fight.
Commentator 0:23 ↗
Still, the experience advantage goes to Pivarjack with 15 pro fights on the resume. Just eight for the sniper. Amelio Cassua considers himself a jiu-jitsu fighter, is how he got started. Picked up the striking. He feels very well-rounded everywhere. But I think that's going to be the advantage for him in this match-up against Cassua. Eventually trying to get this fight to the ground.
Yeah, doing a really good job of funneling him into the fence here.
Oh, that's a nice right hand though.
That's good for Pivar. He's got to get a little bit of respect. Well, it is interesting. Despite the three and a half inch height advantage for Pivarjack, it's Cassua that has the reach advantage.
Cassua's looking for that overhand right. You can see he's, he notices the chin of Pivarjack up in the air. And they were exactly like this too, Alan. They were this opportunistic, someone, someone shooting on him.
Yeah.
And he's very, he's got a lethal squeeze.
Nice job. I can see getting out of that one.
Good right hand by Pivarjack.
Yeah, this is where I mean Pivar can really thrive in a bit of a chaotic... Oh, the knockdown by Pivar!
Going for the finish! Cassua's legs, big time trying to survive. That's it! Herb Dean called it. Pivar wins it!
A look at this. You see a little labored movement right there from Cassua, and Pivarjack is able to capitalize on it. Lands the right hand. As soon as he has him hurt, he's able to pounce on it. Look at him. Lead hook, right hand on the chin, and just look at the way he goes down right there. And these type of exchanges from Pivar is where he really thrives. We keep speaking about it. He's been in a lot of wars against some very tough veterans. When he found the opportunity here, he knew how to finish this fight and close out the show. Take a look at the boss man right here, liking what he sees right there in that big finish. Us too, Dan.

Referee Herb Dean calls a stop to the fight for the winner by TKO, Damian Pivar.

And Connor, five years older is Connor. He is several inches taller as well and a significant five-inch reach advantage.
Herb Dean 3:11 ↗
All right, fighter, are you ready? Fighter, are you ready?
Commentator 3:14 ↗
All right, both of these fighters coming in undefeated. Callum Connor fell in love with the sport watching Anderson Silva and Conor McGregor, two of the biggest names. And same thing for Connor.
You can see her by Lup for the finish here. Hammer fists raining down.
Connor kind of pinched Guo Lupo's glove. Found a way to get back to his feet.
You can see Guo. Oh, there's that overhand right in the starting to get through the defense of Connor.
He needs to go back to a long range. He can't just keep cover-countering with a power puncher like Guo.
Takes away a big part of his game with all those elbows if he doesn't get in tight. I would use the elbows as...
This is what the corner of Connor wanted. They also wanted him circling off the fence. He was getting corralled in that first round at the end, and that's when Lucas had fighting more success. And you see right here, circle middle.
Oh, spinning elbow.
Push him against the fence. Spinning elbows. Powerful strikes. This pace is just insane. Less than a minute ago in round two and already 100 significant strikes landed for both men.
Both guys looking to spin again. Brazilian Merion Barcelos, the entire night of UFC action live from Vegas on Paramount Plus.
Connor's been landing.
Absolutely.
But Guo doesn't have really a mark on his face that we could see from here.
Well, and that was what we talked about, the power difference between these two. Connor is super high volume. He will touch you up. He will find the mark. But the power in Guo Lupo is a difference maker. Connor's still landing as well. His style reminds me a little bit of Bill Cornell, where he just has this crazy diverse set of weapons. He'll go out there and he will absolutely create a dust-up, but it often comes down to a war of attrition. Oh, big shot landing right now.
Wow, Lupo till the very end. What a fight here.
Announcer 5:45 ↗
All three judges scored the contest 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Pierro Walup.
Commentator 5:58 ↗
I am so excited for this fight. I almost forgot about the tale of the tape. Four years older is Moran and a slight one-inch reach advantage. It's deadly.
Herb Dean 6:09 ↗
Ready.
Commentator 6:13 ↗
All right, here we go. It's Moran in the blue trunks, De Lee in the red.
Went toe-to-toe with a very, very good competitor.
Did a combined record of his opponents 57-9-1. That was a nice job on that entry right there for Degley. Looked like he was, he might have missed the punch, but either way, he found himself level change against the fence right here trying to complete this takedown. Nice job scooping that bottom leg.
Moran doing a pretty good job here of trying to get those knees past where he can start to build back up. But watch out for this guillotine.
Oh, looks like this could be a tight... That has quite the fight on it. Nowhere to go right here for Moran. Oh no. Especially with his legs wrapped up like that.
I mean, Degley just arching back into this guillotine.
It looks like Moran has... No, he let it go. He had, he had a bite on the hands.
Yeah, that was good defense there by Paris Moran.
Does not want to get stuck on the ground. Oh, might want to be on top though.
Yeah, he's got left hook to the head, left hook to deliver knockouts. You don't see as much opportunities in the open stand like this. South against Orthodox, you're going to see a lot more right hands. But fortunately for Degley, he's got a couple right-hand knockouts as well. Power in both hands, and it's showing you now elite-level grappling as well.
If nothing else, it forces you to address that one thing, which somehow, which sometimes opens up other spaces. Oh, this is getting tighter.
It is. And I wonder on this show, Alan, even though this is such a dominant position, is this the path to the UFC, not the path to victory?
Exactly. And it's so tempting because it's, I mean, he really is inches from getting a rear-naked choke, especially now that one's under.
What's crazy is you can go back a number of fights with Degley, and all you see is knockout after knockout after knockout.
Oh, the tap! Degley gets it done! That was crazy because that was naughty. That was basically a one-armed rear-naked choke riding leg, and eventually gets his backpack position with the body triangle. Look how Moran is addressing the hands perfectly. Just the left arm of Degley is finishing this choke. That's not even a fully locked-up rear-naked choke. It is under the chin. He's got the blade of his forearm, and that's what's doing the damage, is that forearm is just completely cutting off the breathing and the blood of Paris Moran. That is awesome.
This is a similar rear-naked choke adjustment.
Announcer 8:45 ↗
For the winner by submission via rear-naked choke, Marcos Degley.
Commentator 8:54 ↗
Jaden Ortega, one year separates the two men in age. They are both six feet tall and a slight two-inch reach advantage for the plus 205 underdog, Jaden Ortega.
Herb Dean 9:05 ↗
Are you ready?
