Rubrik, as you know, is a global company, and we came to India roughly seven, eight years ago. And since then, we have been rapidly expanding in India. We went from zero employees in 2017-2018 to roughly over a thousand employees today, and we continue to have big ambitions in India. And we have taken a new facility to house not just the product and engineering team, but also our G&A team, our routes to market, sales and marketing team. Again, we see India as a tremendous opportunity, and we want to invest in this market and continue to grow our business.
You come from humble beginnings, having grown up in Bihar, to studying at IIT Kharagpur, and founding Rubrik in 2014, that is now an NYSE-listed firm. Take us through how the company has grown over the past decade, its main sectors of operation, what is its current standing in the market, and if you could name some of the company's major clients.
So Rubrik started as a cyber resilience company because we fundamentally saw a gap in the marketplace. Cybersecurity industry has been focused on prevention strategies for far too long, and we saw a gap in terms of resilience because you can't prevent the unpreventable. And even when the cyber attack happens, you need to have businesses open, like schools have to be open where kids can go to school, you need to have hospitals operational to take care of the patients. And we saw this opening to create a cyber resilience category and a new technology platform purpose-built for this reason. So we started our company in 2014, and since then we have been rapidly growing. We just announced in our last public results that we surpassed over a billion dollars in subscription ARR and growing very, very rapidly. We have this tremendous opportunity, and we continue to focus on AI, continue to focus on data security. We see this opportunity to transform the legacy backup and recovery into a data security platform to deliver cyber resilience, so that businesses around the world can sleep easy at night because they have the technology to recover and restore their operations when the cyber breach is an attack that will inevitably happen to them.
Let's talk about a spotlight topic, AI and artificial intelligence. Microsoft CEO and Chairman Satya Nadella, on his recent visit to India, said the diffusion rate of AI in India is exciting. What potential do you see for AI, and how do you assess India as a market?
India is a tremendous market, it's the fastest-growing large economy in the world. And if you think about the vision of Digital India, because of the large population, the products and services around healthcare, around education, we have a tremendous opportunity in India. But the digital in Digital India has to be secured, and Rubrik is here to partner with governments and businesses around the country to help them become more cyber resilient, so that they can continue to operate irrespective of the geopolitical situation that is in India, irrespective of the extent of digital transformation and the surface area of attack. Businesses can confidently deliver digital transformation, and AI plays a very important role. AI is as much help to the productivity and defense of cyber attack as it is that it is also helping attackers. So we have to fight fire with fire, and no wonder Satya is focused on investing in AI talent in India, helping India become more AI-centric, because the opportunity is tremendous. Because India has the talent at scale, the market at scale, and the need for digital to be able to transform into the economy that India aspires to be in the next 20-25 years.
Yes, when we talk about AI, as you said, it's not all about the good things. As AI adoption scales, we also grapple with the dark side. AI-driven cybersecurity attacks are on the rise. Experts say that 2025 will see a dramatic rise in AI-driven cybersecurity attacks. Do you second this stance? And also, we are living in a world of data where it is an extremely crucial part of our lives, prone to breaches. What is it that can be done to put forward a tough fight to these attacks and secure data?
As I said before, you have to fight fire with fire. And as the bad actors are applying AI, the good guys have to adopt AI and rapidly adopt AI and the right cybersecurity technology to protect themselves. If the hope is pinned just on the prevention, that hope will fail. Folks have to be prepared for inevitable cyber attack and ensure that they have the technology, people, and products so that they can bounce back, they can get back into business irrespective of the attack. So having the right technology platform, and this is where Rubrik comes in, we are delivering a cyber resilience platform so that the businesses can keep their business ongoing, so that the hospitals are not disrupted, so that again when you go to the bank and swipe your credit card, irrespective of what has happened to the bank, banks can still dole out money to you. Because again, if you look at India and Indian digital infrastructure, particularly payment infrastructure and the last-mile payment, trust is critical. If the apps are down, nobody can transact, it will impact the livelihood of people. So it's not just prevention, but an army of rigid, strong tools to fight cybersecurity in today's world.
Moving on, the DPDP draft recently went out for public consultation, and it provides for a broad framework of processing of personal data. What is your take on the regulation of data in the country, and what would be your key priorities as a stakeholder?
If you look at the DPDP proposal, it has two main components. One is the privacy of personal information, and then the second one is the sovereignty of the data. And Rubrik has the technology to solve for data risk, which is the privacy of the data. Data threat is who is tampering, like mucking around with the private data. And then the last part is that when the services are down, how do we ensure that the services come back up and we can continue to operate.
