CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator discussed the company's global expansion, particularly a new 240-megawatt data center project in India with NVIDIA's Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs, aimed at meeting growing AI infrastructure demand. He argued that other countries view AI as critical for economic growth and are seeking experienced partners. Intrator assessed the U.S. lead over China, citing advantages in silicon and frontier models but noting China's strength in open-source models and its view of AI as a battleground. He addressed financing, including rising interest costs and continued borrowing, and highlighted the company's strategy of five-year contracts with clients to mitigate risk. He also discussed the significant capacity added recently and dismissed concerns about local pushback in Mumbai, noting community excitement.
Key takeaways
CoreWeave plans a new data center in India with 240 megawatts in the first phase, using NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs.
The U.S. leads China in AI, but China is catching up and sees AI as a battleground.
CoreWeave brought on 500 megawatts of power last quarter, likely larger than all other providers combined.
Fox Business alert. A much bigger tapestry — the latest thread spools all the way to India for the AI infrastructure company, announcing a massive new project through an agreement with a data center infrastructure firm. The center is going to have a total of 40 megawatts of capacity with the first phase kicking off in mid-2028. CEO Mike joins us now in studio in a Fox Business exclusive. Plans to build 360 megawatts of constructed IT power in Indonesia. You are everywhere, and aren't you?
We are being pulled all over the world. We thank you for having me. You are exactly right. The demand for the product that we deliver is growing in nature. Our clients really depend on the quality of the infrastructure we deliver. It's important to be able to support them everywhere.
Of the whole team of people at the company who were really focused on how we go about building and scaling. When they continuously come back and say India is going to be an important market for us, there is incredible talent there, there is incredible demand for artificial intelligence, the population is massive. You spent a good bit of time thinking about how we're going to expand into the market, but when this opportunity came up, it was clearly the right one. The size and scale of that operation is appropriate to make sure we are able to project our product into that market.
What does it say that India is partnering with you, Indonesia has partnered with you, that we have a whole bunch of others right now — I've got 51 others being built or operating. But what does it say about the rest of the world trying to catch up with that U.S. and China?
The rest of the world understands this is a critical technology that they need to be able to participate in if they are going to be able to participate in the next stage of economic growth that is going to occur around the world. They are looking for partners who have experience. They're looking for partners who have skill sets. They are looking for people that can not only build the infrastructure but are able to produce the software layer that allows people to use it effectively. That is why we have been able to expand the way we are. That's what gets us invited into these opportunities.
It is a difficult question to answer because there are different pieces of it. The in-video silicon advantage is significant. The model layer, particularly on the frontier — OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini — those models are the best in the world. There are other places the contest is tighter. For the open source models is a good example, where China has very advanced open source models that are closer in terms of their capacity than perhaps the models that are closed for the moment. The U.S. is ahead, as I just saw on the screen, of the data center capacity ahead of China, but China is catching up. China understands deeply, throughout the government, throughout their economy, this is the battleground with which they are going to have to contend with the United States from an economic perspective. So from that perspective, they are and we are the two leaders of this. The question is, we are in front, and are we going to do the things that are necessary to maintain that lead?
You mentioned NVIDIA has such a big lead when it comes to GPUs — the graphics processing units. You and this Mumbai operation, you're going to have Vera Rubin NVL72, the latest and greatest chips being used. There are 72 in each rack. You will have a total of how many GPUs that you are going to use from NVIDIA?
In the first phase, the first 240 megawatts, we will probably have 100 to 150, maybe a little more than that within that phase. But our intention is to scale with them into additional 240-megawatt expansions. It's very, very large.
How much for that? What is — shall we take a look at it another way — 100 or 150 are going to build that. That has to do with what other type of compute, what CPUs are you going to put in there for supporting the network. Is that a per-rack or per-GPU? What do you pay by the rack building? Cap. How much is a rack?
