Hello, good afternoon, everyone. Thank you so much for coming to the Lin Center annual lecture for 2025. My name is Katherine Lou, I'm the director of the Lin Center, and it's my great pleasure today to welcome Professor Anthony Kaldellis. He's a professor of Classics at the University of Chicago, and I see that many of all the people who have come, you must all know him a little bit as well. His research explores the history, culture, and literature of the East Roman Empire from Antiquity to the 15th century, and he has published many books and articles on this time and area, ranging from the 4th to the 15th centuries. He has translated into English the works of many medieval Greek writers, and his own monographs have been translated into other modern languages, including Turkish, French, Romanian, Russian, and Greek. In 2019, some of you may know, he created the first academic podcast of his field, Byzantium and Friends. He's most recently published a new comprehensive history of Byzantium, The New Roman Empire, published with Oxford University Press in 2023, which embeds the social, economic, religious, and demographic developments within a lively narrative framework. And I can say that it's lively because I did read the paper for tomorrow's research seminar, and I just thoroughly enjoyed all 16 pages of it. So I know that he writes extremely well, and I would recommend any of his books to you. This lecture is based on a completed and forthcoming book project coming out, I believe, next year on The Fall of Constantinople, 1453. Please join me in welcoming Professor Anthony Kaldellis to the Lin Center.
