Friends of Vai Elettrico, today we are in Monza, at a point where half of Italy's main motorways intersect, and here A2A has inaugurated its first charging hub. Let's go discover this important new development.
With us is the Chief Executive Officer of A2A, Renato Mazzoncini.
Renato Mazzoncini 0:31 ↗
Good morning. Good morning, good morning everyone.
Interviewer 0:34 ↗
Here we are. Tell me, what does this wonderful facility mean, which I believe is the first, if I'm not mistaken, of A2A, for your expansion strategy in electric charging?
Renato Mazzoncini 0:48 ↗
Well, this starts quite far back, from a consideration we made 3-4 years ago about the progressive uselessness of the classic charging points that have populated the entire country, that is, the so-called 22 kW quick chargers in alternating current, which very few cars are now able to make full use of, because, as anyone who drives an electric car knows, electric cars today charge in alternating current at low power, typically no more than 10 kW, and often even less, so at home, at the office, or even at the charging points, let's say, in our City Plug, that is, the low-power charging points, 7 kW, in cities, or at very high power if you are travelling, in direct current. But essentially the car manufacturers, which are logically the ones driving technology in the end, have abandoned the idea of high-voltage alternating current charging, that is, above 10 kW.
From here the decision to invest either in low-power charging points, and behind us is the new version of the now-famous City Plug, of which we are installing several thousand charging points in Milan, where the customer can stay for as long as they want, day or night, without time limits. So behaving the way someone who normally parks their car in an urban area behaves, or a charging station that resembles the good old petrol pump, to which at least those of our generation are still a bit attached. That is, a place where you arrive, you do a quick refuel, at most you have a coffee and you set off again. For that, obviously, high-power charging is needed. Here we are talking about charging that reaches 300 kW, which means that a medium-to-large car with a 70 kW battery can be charged in 10-15 minutes to 80%.
And the other important thing is that there are multiple charging points. Here there are a full 10 sockets, so they can accommodate 10 cars. So our goal is to make sure that a person arriving here has the certainty of being able to charge their car and continue their long-distance journey. It's quite interesting to go on Google and look at where this station, this Power Hub, is located, because I was looking at it the other day, the layout of the motorways that intersect at this point is almost dizzying. In reality, it explains why we are here, that is, because it is a very high-traffic point, and nowadays you obviously use the app or simply a credit card to activate it, so anyone who arrives, even if they are not one of our customers. There is a totem that tells you which spots are occupied and quickly how many minutes of waiting there are. So, in short, we have tried to study it down to the smallest detail; it was designed together with the MOST, the National Centre for Sustainable Mobility, it was born with the PNRR of which we are partners, and with the universities, precisely to develop the projects of mobility in the best possible way, so for us it is a flagship. We have tried to make it beautiful from an aesthetic point of view as well, but there is also photovoltaics, there is storage, so I mean, it is also a way to test a whole series of technologies, so it is also part of a research programme we are participating in. So, in short, we are very happy and above all I hope our clients who will use it from now on will be too.

We ask the Chief Executive Officer of A2A E-mobility, Fabio Pressi, for a technical description of this facility, that is, its characteristics. We have seen the photovoltaic panels, the storage and the POS.
Fabio Pressi 5:08 ↗
Yes, listing all the innovations of this first Power Hub in the A2A group is difficult because there are indeed many. So, let's start with the topic of the charging points. They are the charging points we know, the Italian charging standard of 300 kW, there are five charging points. We have also inserted a City Plug, the one you already know, because they are the charging in cities, so traditional charging points but inserted in a new context of Energy Management, because the Power Hub has photovoltaic panels, obviously for charging when there is sun, a battery management system to use, perhaps superfluous on this occasion, but useful in other installations where the grid may not have the necessary power.
It is all managed by an energy management system software that optimises the flows from the grid, the flows from the photovoltaics, the charging flows and the battery storage. So it is a system that here is probably oversized because all the features are present, but it helps us study the evolutions we will make in the future of these power hubs, of which we plan 50 by 2035. Let's say our strategy is to find strategic points exactly like this one in Monza, which sits on very important road arteries, the Milan-Monza motorway, five municipalities of the Milan hinterland that create a great deal of traffic, precisely to try to build a point where people can always find an available high-power charging point, which integrates with slow charging, which, as we know, is the other pillar of the group's strategy. We also want to give charging customers peace of mind, so the hub is fully video-surveilled, connected to our critical infrastructure control centre, so we have a direct view of what is happening at the hub, precisely to guarantee safe charging for those who come even in the evening, everything is lit. In short, we are truly building the hubs of the future.
