With a potential IPO, massive funding requirements, and billions flowing into AI infrastructure, the stakes are getting higher. Meanwhile, the connections between AI developers, chipmakers, and hyperscalers are raising questions about what happens if one major player runs into trouble. Dan Ives, Managing Director at Wedbush Securities, said the FTC headline on Anthropic creates a 'perfect storm' for the AI trade, potentially dampening IPO appetite but not the $1.5 trillion valuation. He noted Anthropic will need to raise significant capital, similar to Oracle, and may face a 'penalty box' until it proves its model and regains investment grade. Ives argued Anthropic could reach $1 trillion in revenue and $500 billion in growth opportunities, given its enterprise focus, comparable to OpenAI. He described the market as a 'tale of two cities': strong hyperscaler cloud capex numbers versus disruption across memory and advertising, fueling the sell-off. He emphasized the arms race in AI capital expenditure and investor nervousness, suggesting the sell-off could worsen before stabilizing.

Key takeaways

  1. Anthropic's $1.5 trillion valuation remains intact despite FTC scrutiny, but IPO appetite could be affected.
  2. Anthropic will need to raise substantial capital, similar to Oracle, and may face a 'penalty box' until proving its model.
  3. Ives predicts Anthropic could reach $1 trillion in revenue and $500 billion in growth opportunities over coming years.

  1. 0:01I'll get you, Dan, first on this FTC headline, which again, a trade that was already under some pressure today looked like it took another leg lower when this came out. What's your concern?

All right, we'll wait for a comment if we get one from any of the parties involved here and what this reporting suggests might happen. Kate, thank you very much. That's Kate Rooney. Just the mere talk of this has obviously had an impact on the market itself, and almost every quadrant of the AI trade. Let's bring in Yorkville Advisors partner Dan Ives, and also NYU Stern School of Business's Aswath Damodaran. It's good to have you both with us. I'll get you, Dan, first on this FTC headline, which again, a trade that was already under some pressure today looked like it took another leg lower when this came out. What's your concern?
Dan Ives 0:33 ↗
It's a perfect storm moment. It's the last thing investors want to see because Anthropic, foundationally, is so key to this AI revolution build-out. And I think it's something where does it ultimately affect the IPO in terms of the appetite. I continue to think that sort of 1.5 trillion valuation will continue to be there. But in terms of the amount of money they're going to have to raise, just like we're seeing with Oracle and others, it's an arms race, and it definitely would put them a bit in the penalty box. But then it comes down to as they prove out their model, can they get back to investment grade if that such is the case. I think that's how investors are thinking about it.
Host 1:10 ↗
You use interesting words when you say can they prove out their model. I mean, the market, even though it's a private company, is sort of giving it the benefit of the doubt already by virtue of how it's invested and pushed higher. A lot of the stocks in the food chain, it's so central and integral to the whole story because its customer base is the story. That's why there would be concern.
