Welcome to this second day. How was the first day?
Thank you and Dario, welcome. Thank you for taking the time to come here.

Thank you for having me.

Absolutely. First of all, congratulations on your fundraising round. It's huge. It's impressive.
We are at a growth conference and you are the fastest-growing software company. You went from 0 to 100 million in 2023. You multiplied that by 10 to reach 1 billion in 2024, and we're only halfway through the year and you're already at 5 billion. To put that in perspective, it took Microsoft 40 years to reach 100 billion and Apple 35 years. You could get there in just a few years. How do you manage this scaling while staying true to your mission and principles?
Dario Amodei 0:55 ↗
It's funny how we perceive the exponential. It's like there are two voices in my head when I look at the exponential curve with 10x growth each year. Part of me says this is crazy, you need to be sensible. Once you get into the billions, the money has to come from somewhere. People don't spend that much. This can't continue, and yet so far it does. At some point it will stop or at least slow down a bit. But I've found the tension between these two perspectives very interesting. You wonder how this is possible, how growth can sustain itself at such a fast pace. We face the same tension with investors. On one hand, it's tempting to say growth will continue at this breakneck pace, but that seems insane. So I started telling investors and everyone that there are two ways to see it and we don't know which one is right. To maintain this growth, we've had to scale much faster than a normal company, whether it's in terms of headcount, process, or go-to-market. So we've always tried to stay ahead by asking how we could go faster and imagining where we would be in 6 months. As for staying aligned with our mission, I think succeeding while staying true to these principles is perhaps the biggest challenge. You have to find a balance between the two. On one hand, we need to be pragmatic. You can't be rigid about everything. But we focus on the fundamental elements of our mission: safety, security, and trust. This applies both to our ability to be a trusted partner for businesses and to our responsibility to deploy this technology for the good of society. Keeping these principles as beacons, even during this period of hypergrowth, has allowed us to continue scaling. I think paradoxically, the trust in our shared mission among our employees and customers has been a unifying force. It has allowed us to survive this scaling in a way that avoids the fragmentation that other fast-growing companies can experience. Culture is this unifying force.

Yes, we consider culture as our second product and I think it's very similar to how you see things. You mentioned the exponential curve. Most of us here think linearly. We struggle to think exponentially. Yet, model capabilities are evolving exponentially and growth is also cumulative. You seem to have a clearer vision of what's happening on this exponential curve. So what will happen with AI in 2 or 3 years? Where will this lead us?
