About Michael Geraghty

In a 2016 interview at IFT16, Mike Geraghty, then President of Sensient Colors, discussed consumer trends and the company’s new SupraRed product. Geraghty said that about two-thirds of the population had a high level of interest in food coloring from more natural sources and cleaner labels. He stated that between 2015 and 2016, there had been a significant change in the buying public moving from intent to action regarding switching to products with simpler ingredient statements. Geraghty introduced SupraRed as a natural red color designed for high-heat environments such as bakery and extruded cereals. He said the product could withstand processing heat and provide a vibrant red color)Skip. Geraghty described the period as exciting for the company, noting that they had made significant progress in closing the gap between natural and certified colors. He also cautioned against the fallacy that natural colors should look different, stating that customers should expect the same vibrancy, strength, stability, and consistency.

My name is Mike Garrity. I'm the president of Sensient Colors. We watch the consumer trends on a regular basis, and we've been doing it for years. Probably the most dynamic thing we're seeing is about two-thirds of the population are very interested and have a high level of interest in getting their food coloring from more natural sources and cleaner labels, simpler ingredients. That trend has been fairly steady over the last few years. It's probably a moderate steady trend, but within the last year, one of the big differences is now we see about two-thirds of the population have moved from an intent—meaning we will switch—to actually buying coming from a cleaner label or a simpler ingredient statement. So I think the biggest message is between 2015 and 2016 there's been a significant change in the intent of the buying public. The biggest fallacy out there is you should expect something different in your color. You really need to expect the same type of vibrancy, the same type of color strength, the same stability and consistency in your product year to year. There are two great programs. One has to do with our Super Red line. This is for people who need a strong natural red for high heat environments like bakery and extruded cereals, dry process goods. In the grocery store you see this product can withstand the heat of the customers' processing and gives you a nice vibrant, lovely red color. You're going to see that as a new launch this year called Super Red. So it's a really exciting time for us because we've made some significant closures in that gap between natural and certified colors.
