We have here with us today a very interesting visitor. You know, if the cloud had an inventor, probably he would have been the inventor of the cloud, but he's agreed to be the godfather of the cloud or something like that. So let me welcome, and please welcome with a big round of applause, Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO. Thank you.

Key Quotes (8)

“All of that means nothing if you do not have quality data — garbage in is garbage out — and modern AI systems will produce very convincing garbage out if the input data is poor.”

▶ 1:19

“Would today's technology have found Jim Gray faster? Maybe — we no longer need humans in the loop because we can do image recognition at a scale that is unparalleled, and predictive modeling could have helped locate where a boat might have gone.”

▶ 4:46

“I believe we have a massive data divide — there's not just a digital divide in services, there's a huge divide in terms of high quality data, especially in crises; if you're not mapped you cannot get help.”

▶ 6:49 CONTROVERSIAL POLICY

“Things that are economically interesting are generally well mapped, but we need to change that and 'map for humanity' so areas that aren't commercially valuable still get accurate maps.”

▶ 10:45 CONTROVERSIAL POLICY

“In Haiti volunteers and open-source maps two days after the earthquake produced maps that the Red Cross, the United Nations and the United States Marine Corps used — open data created by people on the ground was critical to the response.”

▶ 16:18 POLICY

“The amount of microplastics in fish is unbelievable — if you eat a fish you're eating plastic, and projects like the 30 Rivers initiative use sensors and AI to track and catch plastic at the source.”

▶ 34:19 CONTROVERSIAL

“My cloud is bigger — if anyone has large datasets we will host them for free on AWS via our Open Data Registry, and egress to get the data out is also free.”

▶ 37:10 POLICY

“With accurate map data, AI and cloud we can move from reactive response to prevention — for example positioning emergency services at the edge before a big storm hits.”

About Werner Vogels

Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer at Amazon, recently discussed the societal and workplace implications of artificial intelligence in two public appearances. In a September 2026 interview on On the Record, he argued that AI is unlikely to eliminate jobs on a massive scale, describing such concerns as largely a media-driven narrative. He stated that AI would instead automate repetitive tasks and shift workers toward roles requiring judgment, creativity, and empathy. Vogels also addressed risks associated with AI, including the potential for autonomous agents to be misused, and emphasized that technology itself is neutral, with outcomes depending on how humans choose to deploy it. He cited security and the implementation of guardrails as his primary concerns, noting Amazon's systems detect approximately 120,000 malicious domains weekly. In a July 2026 presentation, Vogels focused on the challenge of building trustworthy AI systems, noting that large language models are optimized for plausibility rather than truth. He argued that because these models cannot verify their own outputs, surrounding systems must be designed to check them, and he advocated for integrating open data into AI systems to enhance verification. Vogels also highlighted the importance of responsible technology use, stating that the ethical question is not whether AI can be used, but why it is not being used to address hard human problems. He concluded by showcasing the work of Amazon's CTO fellows, whom he described as doing the real work in applying technology to real-world challenges.
