Axios media correspondent Sara Fischer speaks to Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince at Axios House at Cannes 2026.
What Matthew Prince said
Written from the verified transcript and checked against it. Every figure links to the moment it was said.
Matthew Prince said getting traffic from Google to websites is now 10 times harder than four years ago, double last year's five times figure. He said OpenAI is now 1,500 times harder than Google of four years ago, up from 750, and Anthropic is 70,000 times harder, up from 30,000. He argued this reflects users trusting AI interfaces and not clicking links, which will disintermediate publishers. He predicted AI agents will shrink the convenience advantage of brands, making brand identity less about logos and more about reliability and quality. He warned AI could destroy small businesses because agents will favor established players, leading to massive consolidation, and said the industry is not discussing what a brand means in agentic commerce.

For those of you who don't know who Matthew Prince is, he's the co-founder and the CEO of Cloudflare, and he is taking charge trying to help publishers and independent creators now really fight to keep their premium IP in their own hands. Please give a warm welcome for Matthew. Matthew.
No pressure. Well, I guess maybe let's start with where we left off last year. One of the things that we talked about was, you know, in the evolution of the internet, it used to be that for every time that you encountered a search engine, you were guaranteed a certain amount of traffic, and that ratio was pretty low. Then the AI platforms step in, and they that ratio is now so so big that it's hard to figure out for publishers a way that you can actually thrive. What's evolved in the past year? Are the ratios getting bigger or smaller?
Yeah, so what we talked about last year was how much harder it was to get traffic, and I think it actually dovetails really well with a conversation that we just had, which is actually driving traffic to the open internet has gotten significantly harder. Last year, we talked about how it was about five times as hard to get traffic from Google to your site than it was just 4 years ago. That's gotten twice as bad today, so now it's 10 times as hard to get traffic. That's the good news. Last year, we talked about OpenAI being 750 times harder than the Google of 4 years ago. Now it's 1,500 times harder. Last year, we talked about Anthropic being 30,000 times harder. This year, it's 70,000 times harder. So, it and what that signals isn't that those companies are evil or that they're trying to kill you. What it signals is humans are trusting the interface of AI more and more, and they're not clicking on the footnotes. They're not following the links. They believe that the AI systems are right, and I mean, I experienced this myself. Like, I type a search into Google, and the AI overview comes up, and nine times out of 10, I'm just like, 'Oh, yeah, that's probably the right answer.' And I just go on with my day. And I think that's what if everyone is doing it. What people don't understand about AI to this point is we've all gone through that platform transition. We know what it was like going from the browser to social to mobile. We're going through another platform transition. The way that consumers are going to experience information is through their AI agent. And that's going to disintermediate the relationship with publishers enormously. And that has enormous effects on what's happening with I mean everything at this conference. I walk around and I'm kind of like do these people know they're dying dinosaurs, right? And that sucks, but something has to change.
