Pierre Gattaz, hello. Former president of Medef, CEO of Radiall, and author of Gagner Plus, c'est maintenant — that's your latest book, just published by Fayard on August 27th. So, earning more, yes, but by working more, since that's clearly your proposal. I was just with Philippe Brun from the Socialist Party, and they're still defending retirement at 62. So the context doesn't entirely support your position. But you're convinced: we'll have to work more.
I wrote this book with three other CEO friends: Michel de Rosen, Maxime Aach, and Xavier Fontanet. The idea is to transform economic reforms — often poorly presented in France as ultra-liberal, anti-social, etc. — into purchasing power for the French. We listed 30 savings measures, because we need to make savings. The public sphere is obese, as everyone knows, with an extremely generous but bankrupt social model. These reforms aren't sacrifices. Work must pay. These are rewarded efforts, and we need to give money back to the French. That's why we were against the two extra free days that François Bayrou wanted to impose. All work must pay. We also say we should go from 37 back to 40 hours — that's an 8% net result. As for retirement, all of Europe has moved to 65, 67, 69. Why is France different? The Socialists have gone totally back to the 19th century. It's François Mitterrand on May 2nd, 1981. François Hollande with the 75% tax on the rich. They haven't understood that great wealth and great fortunes are enormous locomotives for the country. You'll drive them away, just like all my Radiall competitors fled over 30 years. I had 20 competitors when I arrived in 1992. I have zero left. They sold their companies — SMEs, mid-caps, beautiful family businesses. And that's why we have only 5,000 mid-caps compared to 15,000 in Germany. If we continue with these tax follies — the little music we keep hearing from the PS — the real estate wealth tax is total heresy. We must stop and make savings. If you re-tax everyone, especially great fortunes, you're pouring water into a leaking bathtub.
Philippe Brun assured us he's certainly not anti-enterprise or anti-business. Hard to believe given the list of upcoming tax hikes, but anyway, he came to defend himself. I invite you to listen to the replay. Now, going back to how you present things to the French — François Bayrou says 'we're going to make savings.' That doesn't work. You need to present things differently, give a vision.
