Host 0:00 ↗
Good evening everyone. Tonight's livestream will be hosted by me, Shuang Ge, and Qiang Ge. We will be disassembling a car and discussing product experience, materials, and design. We will take it slow and answer your questions in the comments.
I will try to explain in a simple way. We have trained Qiang Ge intensively. The disassembly process goes from outside to inside. Let's see how far they have gotten.
Lei Jun 3:29 ↗
Many netizens say our Xiaomi car looks good, especially the paint. The new generation SU7's advertising color is Capri Blue, inspired by Italian sea caves. It's a blue that makes time slow down. Our engineering and process are also advanced. Qiang Ge, would you like to explain the process?
Qiang Ge 4:12 ↗
Sure. Half the credit goes to design, the other half to manufacturing. The paint process is complex. We use a 3C2B process: three coats and two bakes. Let me explain...
Lei Jun 4:40 ↗
What about the paint process on the new SU7 Pro?
Qiang Ge 4:45 ↗
We chose 3C2B to create better colors and texture. It involves three sprayings and two bakings. The first layer is the steel sheet with galvanization, then pretreatment, then electrophoresis, then primer, then color coat, then clear coat. Each step has a purpose.
Lei Jun 5:06 ↗
Wait, say that again. What is 3C2B?
Qiang Ge 5:08 ↗
3C means three coatings: primer, color, clear. 2B means two bakings. The process ensures high gloss and scratch resistance.
Lei Jun 5:37 ↗
How are the first three layers done?
Qiang Ge 5:40 ↗
On a galvanized steel sheet, we do pretreatment (zirconium-based), then electrophoresis to form a primer, then a middle coat that fills imperfections and provides impact resistance. Then color coat, flash dry, then clear coat, then bake at 140°C for 20 minutes. Total 7 layers.
Lei Jun 7:52 ↗
So I understand: first pretreatment and electrophoresis, then the 3C2B process. The middle coat is sprayed and baked, then color coat, then clear coat with final bake.
Qiang Ge 8:17 ↗
Yes. The middle coat is critical for surface quality and stone chip resistance.
Lei Jun 9:38 ↗
So the 3C are middle coat, color coat, clear coat, with two bakings in between. This gives the paint high gloss and scratch resistance. Is this process common?
Qiang Ge 10:20 ↗
Not all cars use it. Only relatively high-end cars. Our custom cars use 4C3B, which is more expensive. In this class, 3C2B is very advanced.
Lei Jun 10:32 ↗
Many people think making colors is easy, but each color requires validation and development. The middle coat must match the color coat. We have about 30 colors now. I recommend visiting the store to see the actual paint.
Qiang Ge 12:18 ↗
As an engineer, I like the electric stone green best. It's the most popular optional color.
Lei Jun 12:33 ↗
We have released about 30 colors. The paint looks bright and different from others. Today we explained the 3C2B process. Even with the same process, different material choices and standards can lead to differences.
To build a dream car, we put great effort into exterior paint. Two years ago we started a '100 colors plan' to collaborate with top paint manufacturers. The development cycle is long; we design 100 colors and adapt them one by one.
Host 14:00 ↗
Let's not rush. People are curious about the disassembly. We will go deeper. Besides new colors, the new SU7 also has a popular new wheel: the double-layer forged plum blossom wheel. Qiang Ge, please introduce it.
Qiang Ge 14:58 ↗
The first generation SU7 had a plum blossom wheel using ordinary casting. This time we use forging, which allows a double-layer hollow structure. The forging process is complex: from an aluminum ingot, repeated forging forms a dense structure, then CNC machining with 22 tools takes over 13 hours for roughing and 6 hours for fine details. Then black paint, then milling the outer layer to reveal the bright surface, creating a 3D double-layer effect. Finally, a clear coat is applied.
Host 20:58 ↗
So the high take rate is justified. Forged wheels are lighter and stronger. What about ordinary wheels?
Qiang Ge 21:29 ↗
Ordinary wheels are cast, which is simpler but the material is less dense. Forged wheels can be thinner and look cooler.
Host 22:40 ↗
Let's check the disassembly progress. The interior seats and doors are removed. Now let's look at the front grille change. Why did it change?
Qiang Ge 23:27 ↗
We upgraded to a 4D millimeter-wave radar, which is larger. So we made a mirror-like decorative panel. The 4D radar adds height information, preventing false braking.
Host 24:51 ↗
Any other changes? Also, the front camera now has high-pressure washing.
Qiang Ge 24:57 ↗
There's an AGS (active grille shutter) inside. We upgraded from 16 to 100 steps for precise control, improving energy efficiency. The new SU7 achieves 902 km range thanks to such details.
Host 28:03 ↗
Please explain how it works.
Qiang Ge 28:07 ↗
Let's demonstrate. The AGS opens when cooling is needed, and closes otherwise. With 100 steps, it can adjust precisely. Also, on the Max version, we added a brake cooling duct to improve thermal management.
Host 30:20 ↗
I remember Shuang Ge tested continuous braking. Tell us about that.
Qiang Ge 30:25 ↗
Braking generates heat. With continuous hard braking, heat accumulates and causes fade. Our new SU7 Max has four-piston calipers, ventilated discs, and low-metal pads. The brake cooling duct directs air to the discs, allowing consistent performance. We tested 45 consecutive 100-0 km/h stops with minimal fade.
Host 33:06 ↗
Now let's talk about the headlights. The family design language includes the waterdrop headlight and star ring taillight. Qiang Ge, please explain the disassembled headlight.
Qiang Ge 33:28 ↗
The headlight has a '米' shape: one horizontal, one vertical, and four light modules. There's also a hidden corner light that provides 160-degree illumination. The headlight can shine over 400 meters and has a wide beam. It has six LEDs including the daytime running light.
There are high beams, two low beams, and a cornering light. When you turn, it increases brightness to illuminate the direction you're going, making hidden areas on the ground clearer.
Host 35:43 ↗
Honestly, I only knew about the cornering light because of this teardown. I thought we had just four lights, but actually it's five with a daytime running light.
Lei Jun 35:50 ↗
Lighting is very important. The headlights need to look good during the day and be safe and bright enough at night, shining farther and wider. That's the basic philosophy of light design.
Host 35:59 ↗
Yes, making good lights is not easy. Do we have one light already removed? Let's look at the disassembled components.
Qiang Ge 36:06 ↗
Now the front light components have been disassembled. Regarding the headlights being brighter and farther, it relies on these four modules. Let me show you: after removing the cover, here is the module consisting of two high beams and two low beams.
Lei Jun 36:38 ↗
Why not test the viewers? Ask Shuang Ge first: which one do you think is the high beam?
Host 36:43 ↗
Haha, the big one must be the high beam, since high beams need to shine far.
Qiang Ge 36:48 ↗
Actually, the high beam isn't lit right now. All four are low beams. When the low beams are on, all four light up. When high beams are on, the two larger ones below also light up. The reason they're high beams is because they have a fan for cooling, requiring higher power. Here you can see the heat sink and fan design.
Lei Jun 37:34 ↗
Let's compare the high beam and low beam modules. You can clearly see the size difference: the high beam is larger and has more heat sinks. The heat sink uses a cylindrical design to increase surface area. Also, the LED lens can be shown.
Host 37:56 ↗
I find it strangely beautiful. And for better heat dissipation, there's an extra aluminum-based heat sink on the side. That copper color indicates it's copper-based, which conducts heat quickly to the fins.
Qiang Ge 38:19 ↗
Passive cooling alone isn't enough, so we added an active fan. The fan has two 90-degree air ducts—one upward and one sideways—each cooling a high beam module, ensuring they work at optimal temperatures.
Lei Jun 39:06 ↗
OK, so in this light assembly, heat dissipation is very important. We have a copper substrate, different shaped heat sinks for different needs, plus this fan. And here's the smallest light—the cornering light. In total, we disassembled five lights plus a daytime running light, making six.
Host 39:40 ↗
The daytime running light is a long strip of LED. It's very recognizable during the day; I often see Xiaomi cars in my rearview mirror. The whole light design is very refined and uses plenty of materials.
Qiang Ge 40:08 ↗
Regarding the star ring taillight, a key design element is three thin auxiliary rings inside the main ring, creating a halo effect when viewed from a distance. The manufacturing process is special: the back is one-piece injection-molded plastic that transmits light, while the front is spray-painted black, and the light-emitting area is laser-etched. So you see a main light band with three halo bands, like Saturn's rings. Our designer insisted on this, and we achieved it with laser etching technology.
Lei Jun 41:11 ↗
From far away it looks like one ring, but up close there's a main light and three small halos. When the brake lights or running lights come on, the recognition is very high. At night you might just see a star ring, but it actually has three thin lines surrounding it.
Qiang Ge 41:45 ↗
The light ring emits uniformly. Behind it there are many LEDs—the main ring has 360 LEDs spaced just 10mm apart. Through programming, we achieve various animations like welcome greetings or light shows. The LEDs are a special wavelength of 632nm red, called ultra-red, giving a pure, vivid color with strong penetration in rain and fog.
Host 43:10 ↗
So at night if you see a Xiaomi car, look closely at the taillight—it's this ultra-bright red. It's more expensive but gives a purer color and stronger penetration. When photographed, some car lights appear yellowish, but ours doesn't because we chose a better LED wavelength.
Lei Jun 43:49 ↗
When you think our lights look good, besides design, we put a lot of thought into materials and craftsmanship. For example, our pebble-shaped side mirrors are also a masterpiece of styling and engineering. Let me explain the difficulties.
Host 44:14 ↗
Please tell us. I'll help you hold the parts.
Qiang Ge 44:17 ↗
Everyone knows it's a pebble shape. The mirror shell has been removed, so you can see the pebble profile. It uses a ball joint connection rather than a traditional integrated arm, so the mirror rotates around a single point. Also, it's frameless—like a phone with high screen-to-body ratio—giving a large rearview field for safety. In the new SU7, we added a BSD (blind spot detection) light on the mirror. There's also an EC dimming glass for anti-glare: in strong light or headlight glare, the glass darkens automatically. On Max versions, we have auto-dimming. Plus, there's a heating function to prevent fog and water droplets in rain or morning dew.
