What George Hahn said

Written from the verified transcript and checked against it. Every figure links to the moment it was said.

George Hahn opened his solo podcast by noting the heat and haze in New York City, attributing it to Canadian wildfires, and mentioned an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease. He discussed the confirmation hearings for Todd Blanche, calling him a 'Justice Department hope not' and criticizing Republican supporters. Hahn then focused on Christopher Nolan's film 'The Odyssey,' expressing excitement about seeing it in IMAX 70mm but noting sold-out screenings at the AMC 13 on 68th and Broadway, with some tickets reselling for four figures. He saw this as a positive sign for moviegoing. Hahn then complained about grammar errors like 'me and her' instead of 'she and I,' urging listeners to correct others. He described Matt Damon's suit at the premiere, praised Barney Greengrass for lunch, and mentioned a FreshDirect order missing San Pellegrino. He ended by promoting his Substack and noting he records 'The Week' with Scott Galloway.

We are live. Welcome to another episode of Han Solo, part of the George Han experience. Thanks for joining. It is Wednesday, June 15th, and it is hot here in New York City. It's 97° as I speak to you right now on this afternoon on the Upper West Side. 97° Fahrenheit on the thermometer with haze. We have smoky haze coming in from wildfires up north. That's fun. So, add to that an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease and another outbreak, another additionally an outbreak of uh diarrhea. It's good times.
And speaking of diarrhea, there was a, you know, there've been confirmation hearings um most pointedly for um uh Justice Department hopeful Todd Blanche uh or as I like to think of it Justice Department hope not, but you know, anyway. I'm not watching it. I'm seeing enough clips as I glance at my Threads feed and watching Republican types prostrate themselves um for a guy who is literally rotting in front of our eyes, but you kids knock yourselves out. This is all on tape. These confirmation hearings where you all are just kind of like to see wildfire smoke from Canada is currently enveloping NYC. No, I've got my AC on. I don't have it on here in my boudoir where I'm recording this, but Mhm. Anyway, let's see if we can get some comments up in here. And I'm going to go to our Substack window and see how we're doing there. Yeah. Great.
So, if you are watching live via YouTube or Substack, feel free to comment, have a question, chime in. Those of you watching or listening later, you're going to have to enjoy the comments later. And please feel free to leave a comment on Substack if you are a subscriber. Uh paid subscriber, that is. I've reserved commenting on Substack for the paid subscribers. I think that's fair. Um so, yeah, this haze is coming from wildfires up in Canada. This is not the first time it's happened. We had a lot of this. God, was it last year or 2 years ago? It all blends together, doesn't it? We had an episode of this where it was like orange outside for a while. Mhm. Which was pretty crazy. Yeah, I'm having a hot coffee on a hot 97° Fahrenheit afternoon. I'm having a hot coffee.
Uh I just wanted to touch base. I haven't reached out with the people in a while. Um I would love to be going to the movie theaters right now. Um but, nothing showing today that I haven't already seen that I'm dying to see. Like, I've no desire to see this Moana situation or Minions. Uh no, I'm not into any of that. Everything else that's in the theater that I'm interested in, I've already seen. Tomorrow, as many of you surely know, Christopher Nolan's epic film shot in IMAX 70 mm IMAX 70 mm um
Uh I love it like my timing is terrible. Like when I it's when I go live is when the phone rings. I just never all day. I'm here all day, nothing. Karma or whatever it is in the in the atmosphere decides that well, let's wait to call George when he's live streaming live on YouTube and on Substack. Let's wait until then. What? So anyway, I just threw that over to voicemail. What was I saying before I was so hastily Oh, so the the Odyssey. I want to go see that. And the Odyssey is one of the few movies that really is going to demand to be seen on an IMAX screen, right? Christopher Nolan is one of our best living film directors. What an exciting time to be sharing a timeline with a talent like that. I was just having this conversation the other night with my friend Yule Vazquez. We were talking about movies specifically Steven Soderbergh, also David Fincher and Christopher Nolan is another one who makes We are alive in this time. We're not talking about some director from a time past. Right now, we are living in a time where there is an extremely talented director creating exciting storytelling for us to wrap ourselves up in. Christopher Nolan is one of them. I am so excited to be seeing the Odyssey, but I don't know when I'm going to see it because I waited too long. I didn't get tickets in advance. There are no tickets available for at least 2 weeks at the IMAX screen at 68th and Broadway. Which bumps me out. I'm going to keep checking every day because I'm you know, it's also available for screening on the Dolby Dolby Cinema screen and also on the regular screen. I don't This is a film that lends itself to an IMAX experience. It's what it was designed for. So, that's what I'm doing. And uh I'm just going to have to hold out.
What is thrilling though and this Yeah, what is thrilling is that it is getting people out to the movies. There are screenings here in New York, guys. I'm going to pull this up just so that I can get a little accuracy for you, but there are screenings here in New York City in the wee small hours of the morning. I'm talking about 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. So, um today, let's go to Friday, July No, let's go to next Monday, July 20th, all right? So, Monday, July 20th, The Odyssey is showing an IMAX 70 mm um at 6:00 and 10:00. Well, that's a bad example. There are other screen times. All right, so let's go to like Friday, July 24th. IMAX 70 mm screenings start at 10:00 a.m. There are five screenings per day. The movie is just under 2 hours or just under 3 hours, 2 hours and 52 minutes. That includes the credits. So, 10:00 a.m. and then the last screening is at 2:00 a.m. which you are you you are because the movie starts 25 minutes after the scheduled showtime, that means it's starting really at 2:25 and you will be getting out at 5:00 a.m. And want to know something else? 2:00 a.m. And this is a screening on Saturday, July at 2:00 a.m. It is sold out. There are two wheelchair seats available. That's it. Sold out. You go to like a normal time, you know, 6:00 p.m., forget it. Forget it. 6:00 p.m. And this is we're going to out a week. Same thing. Sold out. So, yes, it's annoying and I can and I can moan and all of that and I've seen stories online where people are buying tickets to see the Odyssey in IMAX for four figures. Like they they want it so bad. Now, this says something to me though. This is a signal to me of something encouraging and that is people are interested in getting the out of the house and going to the movies. I've been saying this for years, right? Anybody who's been following me, watching me knows I'm a movie nerd.
Um let's see. So, breaking news, Todd a rocky confirmation hearing for Todd Blanche. All right, I'm not going to get into the full details, but that's just the whatever. Um that's just the headline breaking news update from the New York Times. So, anyway, back to going to the movies. It's really encouraging to know that people are interested going back to the movies. I've been into this for years. I am an AMC Stubs, you know, member and advocate, you know, I should get paid for the amount of time I talk about it. And people are going to the movies. The last few times I've been over to the a uh to the to the I not the IMAX, the AMC 13 at 68th and Broadway, I there is a uh uh a pretty decent crowd going in to see a movie, waiting at the concessions, uh in the movie screening, in the theaters themselves. People are um you know, interested in going to the movies, which is fantastic. I really need to engage the do not disturb mode because again, now I'm getting text messages from the person who called and it couldn't get picked up. Anyway, bad timing. Sorry, George. Sorry, kid. Sorry to you.
Um so someone asked how long will it be at the IMAX at 68th and Broadway? I don't know. I don't know what the plan is. You're going to have to Google that one. I don't know off off the top of my head. Um Don here says, "Ugh, I have to jump off for a conference call." I'll be here later, Don. Don't worry about it. Or this will be here in perpetuity to screen or listen to later on on uh Spotify or Apple podcast. So, I find that exciting. I'm really really looking forward to seeing it. I don't know when I'm going to see it. I'm going to keep looking to see if there's a cancellation or any kind of availability. I wonder if I can set up Can you set up notifications for a screening time for if if an availability comes in? I have to find that out. If anybody has any intel on that, please leave leave me a note in the comments. If you can go into the AMC app and set up I don't know. I'm not paying anything more than regular I'm not doing a premium price thing. No. No. Uh nothing more than what one normally pays. So, anyway, there is that.
Uh what else is on my mind? There was something else I wanted to address. Uh that's been really bothering me lately and that is this. I am hearing um I am hearing that from from regular people who not just not just people with like high school degrees or GEDs. I'm talking about people with college degrees who are starting sentences with for example me and her me and him are going to the movies. Me and John are going to dinner. Me and Kathy are going to the show. Her and me. More and more I'm hearing this. And it's really kind of sparkling the what the reaction from me. This is not elitist educated coastal elite guys. This is grammar that we covered in like what? Fifth grade? Fourth grade? You start a sentence with she or he or they. She and I. He and I. They and I. John and I. Kathy and I. We. I mean it really is the equivalent of saying us is going to the movies. What? No. No. No. So guys, for sake, start calling people on it. People in your life. I have people in my life who do this all the time and I'm literally I think going to stop them and when I say literally, I mean literally. Not just millennial Gen Z literally. I mean literally. I'm literally going to start stopping people and say before you continue she and I. Not her and me. Not me and her. Stop it. stop it. America's getting We are getting dumb enough on other levels. We don't need this. So I implore you, my kind listeners, viewers, subscribers to um pick up the slack on this. I'm counting on you. You know, this is sort of like the the grammatical equivalent of, you know, pulling up your pants here. Let's go. She and I, he and I. We. Unbelievable. It really is. Yeah, this is grammatical flip-flops here. This is grammatical, you know, Crocs. Awful. Like just It is amazing what we as a society are just letting slide. We're just getting so lazy, dumber. Her and me, me and her are going to go to What? And then there And then when it comes to the object of a preposition, between you and I. Nope. It's between you and me. I know you think you sound correct, you don't. So, let's just go back to our fourth or maybe fifth grade grammar school lessons and remember, when it is the object of a preposition like of, in, between, you know, uh it is the objective or what I forget what case that is, but, you know, between you and me, not between you and I. It is between you and me. And with respect to you and I, with respect to you and me, caught myself going to do something, it's you and I are going to go to the party. And between you and me, or you can say just between us. It's easier. But, yeah. Watch your grammar, guys. As I use an expletive.
Um This is a special thanks to it's 23 on YouTube with a $10 tip there in the tip jar. Thank you so very much, whatever your name is, cuz I can't tell what it is because that's a an anonymous username. So, thank you it's some 23 for that tip in the jar. Very generous of you. I really appreciate that. Thank you very much.
Um Someone here on YouTube says, "What about when people say I seen the red car instead of I saw the red car?" Uh yeah, I mean it's all over the place. I mean, we could get Listen. Listen. Listen. Listen. We can go all day on where people up with grammar. Let's just take it one bit at a time, and let's just focus today on the way we start a sentence. Uh she and I he and I you and I Um Oh, Richard Katz. Hey! I know you. Um Thank you, Richard Katz, very much. Um So, yeah. Let's just Let There's a lot we can go into with the grammar. That's just the one thing that's really kind of up my ass lately, and I hear it all the time. You hear it all the time. It's terrible. And we you know, I I I I really am loath to hear that phrase. Do better. You should do better. But in this department, we should do better. We really should do better, and we can. It's not elitist. I'm not being a snob. This is basic You and I, she and I, he and I, not me and her, him and me. God, adults with college degrees pulling Even high school degrees. You know better. Stop it.
Um Oh, Lynette. Thank you so much. Lynette here saying Lynette Feeney from YouTube saying, "My grammar can be sloppy." How cute is that? Ah, that is great. Thank you, Linette. Look at that. My Listen, my grammar is not perfect. The point is we make the effort. We make the effort. It's like when I see um I saw a great picture today of I don't want to say great picture. I just saw a picture. It was just a picture, a press photo of Matt Damon, speaking of The Odyssey, at the New York City premiere at 68th and Broadway they had it, of The Odyssey. And Matt looked He was wearing um He looked really good. He was wearing a really nice kind of unstructured suit. Looked like it could have been Sid Mashburn. It had a ticket pocket. I don't know if Sid Mashburn's into ticket pockets, but looked like an unstructured suit. Might have been seersucker. I didn't really get a close-up of it, but it was a nice blue, dark blue suit, white dress shirt, simple tie. The way the knot was tied, it wasn't a Windsor knot, it was a real four-in-hand, correct knot. Um great proportions. It fit beautifully. And he was wearing brown shoes. Some people had some issues with the brown shoes. In Matt's case, I'm like, "I'm going to let it slide." Cuz he looked really good. He looked like an adult. He looked like a grown-up. Matt Damon knowing who he is, a nice handsome kid from Boston. Matt and I are the same age. Um nice handsome guy from Boston dressing like a grown-up. So, go look at Matt Damon, the pictures of Matt Damon from the New York premiere of The Odyssey. He's wearing a dark blue suit, kind of unstructured, not a real stiff, shoulder-padded, um you know, with a stiff inner lining kind of a suit. It was a But it was nicely tailored. A white shirt, also a blue tie with like It wasn't white polka dots, but it was a white some other design on it, like a pattern. Um it was a little pocket linen and a white handkerchief kind of like stuffed in the breast pocket of the jacket. And dark I think he had double monk strap shoes. I don't I hate double monk straps. But again, I was just like, "You know what?" He was close, and it was good enough for me. But he looked really great. And I was like, "Oh, finally an adult who's not trying to look like he's in that fashion." Not that there's anything wrong with that. Matt Damon looking like a guy who knows who he is. He looked like he didn't have the help of a stylist. Matt Damon to me looked like a guy who was emulating the way his dad dressed when his dad went to the office when he was a kid. That's kind of where I come from with my sartorial choices. More often than I want to admit. But sometimes it all circles back to what my dad used to wear. Oddly enough, but there we are. So. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Um also, quick thing before I go. I had a little FreshDirect fail today. It's a little luxury problem. One of the reasons I placed this order the yesterday with FreshDirect. Um Uh I was out of As a non-drinker, I allow myself the treat of a case of glass bottles of San Pellegrino. It's an indulgence. You know, I enjoy sparkling water. It's delicious. It's refreshing when it's ice cold. I will sometimes have a little tumbler of sparkling water with my coffee. Uh but I love ice cold San Pellegrino. Delicious. And I buy it by the case. The bottles are like You've seen me drink them, I think, if you watch my videos with any regularity. And um so I ordered a case, and then just to make it not just about that, I added other things in the bag. Like I ordered some bananas, some stuff I like. Bananas, oranges. I love navel oranges, my god. Apples, etc. And what arrived this morning, everything but the San Pellegrino. Like, that was the whole reason I placed the order. Was very disappointing. It's a luxury problem. At the end of the day, I don't really care, but I just thought, "Ugh." Kind of paying all this money, and the one thing I was hoping for more than anything was missing. That sucks.
Um but to end on a positive note, I had a wonderful lunch today with my friends Andy Austroy and Lara Neman. Lara is a producer is the producer of the Pivot podcast with Scott Galloway and Kara Swisher. The crown jewel of the the Vox podcast media podcast What is it? What is the Vox media podcast network? That's what it's called. Anyway, and uh Pivot is the crown jewel of that portfolio. And Lara is the producer of it. She and I have become good pals, and our friend Andy Austroy and we went to Barney Greengrass, and I live a block and a half from Barney Greengrass. Lucky, lucky me. Um I was at Barney Greengrass actually about a week and a half ago, and then of course I was at Sag Harbor when they did that thing on 4th of July weekend. This is my third Barney Greengrass experience in 2 weeks, which is more than usual. Anyway, I because I've had so much Barney Greengrass lately, like I've had latkes, which you have to have when you're there, and I've had bagels, and I've had black and white cookies, and the locks, and the yeah. So, today I tried to be a little bit more behaved, and I just got scrambled eggs with salmon, nova. Their salmon, holy Like, and of course if you're a sturgeon thing, I mean, Barney Greengrass is the sturgeon king. Or get the whitefish, you're not going to be disappointed. You're going to be delighted, actually. But I their salmon, they're they're they're And I am not a lox person, but something about Barney Greengrass' salmon, the Nova. Oh. It is smoked just right. It is shaved like sliced so razor It's like translucent. You could see through it if you hold it up. And you layer that on top of I had a lightly toasted plain bagel. I don't even think I put any cream cheese on it. No, I stay I was trying to behave. And scrambled eggs. Delicious. Delicious. And a diet Coke, as did Lara. Although I keep forgetting when I when I go to I'm a diet Coke person. I got a bunch of that in the fridge. But when I go to Barney Greengrass, I keep forgetting I like to indulge in or treat myself to a Dr. Brown's. Either a root beer or a cream soda, right? Or a cherry soda. Can be delicious. Um and if they have the doc the diet varietal, even better. So, if you are going to I if you're As I said, I'm very lucky to be very close to Barney Greengrass, and I have to, you know, sort of regulate what I order from them. The menu's huge. I mean, there's a bunch of things. I try to keep it healthy. Joe Feria, you're going to have to tell me what is the difference between Coke Zero and diet Coke? I Like they both have aspartame. Like Anyway. Um Not that I'm putting Coke Zero down. I'm so not. Not at all. By all means, follow your bliss. Um What was I saying? Poor Dane, like Dr. Brown's cream soda. I have no doubt Dr. Brown's cream soda is the And it just goes happens to go very well with the offerings of Barney Greengrass. And I forgot that today, cuz I would have indulged in one of those instead of a diet Coke. But nonetheless, I digress. I digress. My point is if you're visiting New York and it's something you do once a year or twice a year and you're going to Barney Greengrass by all means. You have to indulge in I mean get the matzo ball soup. Get get the fattening stuff cuz you're there once it like get the black and white cookie get the potato latkes get like a stacked sandwich or whatever your jam but get like go deep. You know what I mean and don't apologize for it. You're off your diet when you're here but if like me you live literally like I am about a par four away from Barney Greengrass. And um if Barney Greengrass were the green from my apartment I could hit that green and two and one putt for a birdie. Um I I can't get that stuff every time I go there. So today I tried to be a little healthier less carby and I was so yeah.
All right so Joe okay so Jordan here says taste Coke Zero tastes way better and much more like regular Coke than Diet Coke. I see. Uh nothing else is different. Coke Zero is closer to the original Coke taste. I see. Huh what do I drink with Chinese food? water water Yeah. I don't like Chinese food it tastes like you know whatever. I don't like anything carbonated with Chinese food probably not. Or just nothing with any taste in it. I've heard this all right I should try Coke Zero I should give it another try. Maybe I'll have a Coke Zero on my way to my my meeting later. Yeah anyway. Uh thanks for clearing that up Joe. All right I've heard that that Coke Zero tastes more like original Coke than Diet Coke. Okay. That's fair. But I happen to like the taste of Diet Coke. I do. I know it's different. Um I happen to like it's an acquired taste. I like the way Diet Coke tastes. Diet Coke is extremely popular. But I will give it a shot. Thank you for the suggestion. Does anybody have anything going on over at Substack I need to address? Have I tried Topo Chico mineral water? Yes, I have. It is delicious.
