Jake is in Vista, California visiting at Toulon HQ with Sean Toulon to talk about the latest Smallbatch project release: La Jolla. The La Jolla pays tribute to the tri-sole designed used by arguably the greatest golfer of all time and his frequent success at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA. Smallbatch putters have extra attention, time, and effort put into them as works of art, with tons of backstory and a rich history in the game of golf. The La Jolla is crafted from 904L Stainless Steel which takes a little bit longer to machine, but with a really really nice feel. The La Jolla is a softened...

Hey everyone, Jake here from Made for the Range, back on the Made for the Range YouTube channel with another small batch talk with Mr. Sean Toulon of Toulon Golf. Really cool today, we're actually in Sean's office, so thanks for having me.
Sean Toulon 0:12 ↗
And then I'm happy to do this. Yeah, great to have you here. It's still under construction, it'll look a little cooler next time you're here. Yeah, but really, really cool things happening at Toulon HQ right now. Yeah, thank you so much.
Jake 0:23 ↗
Very awesome stuff. Yeah, great. So we've got small batch La Jolla, which is a new Tri-O design from Toulon Golf. You guys have done Tri-O stuff in the past, so I think we can start off just talking about what makes this one unique compared to the ones that have been created already, as well as getting into a little bit of a Tri-O discussion. Because Tri-O as a concept has a lot of history on the PGA Tour, but it's also just one of those things where when people say every blade shape is the same, or every design of one type is the same, it's really not. There's so many intricacies to this, and then how things set up, how it looks, what you've done to finish it off. So give us a rundown of La Jolla in the first place. Where is La Jolla? Why is La Jolla important? And then we'll run through the putter.
Sean Toulon 1:08 ↗
Yeah, first of all, to just backtrack a little bit, I think all blades are different. Right? So you would look at the overall architecture, I guess, and say, 'Oh, that's that,' or 'That's that.' But when you dig a little bit deeper, and especially I think in what we do, it's like, 'Oh my God, that's different. Oh my gosh, that's different.' That's totally, especially in the small batch project. Yeah, I think so. And that's where these things really kind of take on a life of their own. It's all through the nuance. Yeah, certainly the architecture, all of that that Carson did years ago, unbelievable. Right? But what could we do if we looked at it through a little different lens? Yeah, absolutely.
Jake 1:50 ↗
Yeah. So you guys have had Tri-O designs in the past, so what makes this one a little bit different than those ones?
Sean Toulon 1:55 ↗
Softer. You know, so I think Jake, when you listen to us speak in 2025, the operative word is going to be softer. How do we make our putters sound a little softer, feel a little softer, overall to the touch a little softer, a little friendlier, just a little bit more love, I guess, would be a good word for it. You know, as we looked at everything, and you live with these putters for a year, you know, or two, and are around them all day every day, you go, 'Gosh, you know, maybe we could do this,' or 'Maybe we could do that,' and it all sort of comes to life in really what ends up being a totally new shape. La Jolla, super cool for us because it's really a mix of San Diego with our small batch favorite, Santa Monica. Yeah, and there were things that we liked about both and things that we would change about both as we go and evolve. So that really comes to life here in this putter called La Jolla. La Jolla is a cool name for us because, hey, it's close by. It's very close to, it's just north of San Diego, just a little way south of Santa Monica. So it's pretty cool, and it happens to house this golf course called Torrey Pines where incredible things have happened. So I think it's aptly named.
Jake 3:24 ↗
Yeah, it's got such intricate details too. Like just holding it this close in my hands right now, the milling on the bumpers. Yeah, I didn't notice that until just like the light hit it just perfectly. So the milling on the bumpers is super cool because that gives you... is that like a... it's like a tuna pattern on the bumpers?
Sean Toulon 3:43 ↗
Yeah, well, it's a really fine double fly. But even Jake, if you just take your finger and just kind of sort of massage it, it's so soft to the touch, right? And that's... these things are really tactile, visceral objects, and we want them... when you look at it, we want it to create an emotion. And when you look at it, you just go like, 'Oh my god, look, they did this and they did that.' And it's just ultimately about care, right? And no surface left really untouched here to really create what we think is an awesome putter.
Jake 4:19 ↗
Yeah. So talk to us about the just the overall design of a Tri-O, and who, like, who would feel really at home with a Tri-O, and what does the Tri-O actually do?
