Hello friends and welcome. Oh god, it feels good to say this, to episode 250 of the Xbox Era podcast. I'm Sik Mechanico, and I'm joined as per usual by special Nick. What's going on?
No, sorry, not good enough. More energy.
Whatever. From the airport, you were up all night celebrating your wife's 40th.
Yes, it was my wife's 40th birthday last night. It's okay though, Jesse's here, he's full of beans. I didn't get to sleep till 2 a.m. I'm very sorry. I'm very focused on moving these hats with you. The sleepy hats. You both got them.
Yep. Okay everyone, to the sleepiest celebratory episode of the Xbox podcast ever. Nah, I'm bringing the energy. I've had some caffeine. I'll be all right. I'll get there eventually. My wife will eventually wake up and bring me a large coffee, hopefully not hungover.
Hopefully. I'm fully predicting at some point in the show that the crash community, which is always nice because later on in this episode we'll be airing our pre-recorded interview with the CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Pre-recorded, so please stop asking on Twitter if we can ask him a certain question. I saw one tweet that was like, 'Ask him if all those games from the State of Play yesterday are coming to Xbox.' Just to prove it to people, look, there it is. It's right there. If I press play, it starts. That's what you're going to get to see a little later in the show.
Yeah, that's how we're going to do it. All right, we're going to disappear and let you guys enjoy. You get over 36 minutes straight of us talking with Phil.
Yeah, gives me a chance to get a nap in.
Yeah, you'll come back and me and Nick will just be fast asleep. It is your life. Or hey, Phil, we're celebrating episode 250. Could you come on and help us celebrate? Those are the two paths forward. One of them, get a yes. I sent the email to Phil saying, 'Look, sorry about episode 200 and what John did, but do you think you can jump on for 250?' I guess, yeah, not a problem. I went back to the old look to celebrate us hitting 250 episodes. It's a good podcast. It looks beautiful. But yeah, all the people asking for us to ask the hard-hitting questions. I'm no expert, and I think we can all safely say none of us went to journalism school.
2026? Like, what do you think he's going to say? He's not going to ask that. He's going to dodge it, right? So as an interviewer, you have to pick what you want to know and then find a way to frame how to get to the answer that you're looking for. That's the best thing I can say about it. So all of this nonsense about hard-hitting... I'm sure it would be really fun to see someone squirm and be grilled, but that's not what we're here to do. So if you have any delusions on that, just check out. It's not a problem. Remember, we'd like him on again in the future. Let's grab some more. And I know people are going to say, 'Oh, you're just being easy.' It's like, no, there are ways to ask questions that are really interesting.
Mind that we're Xbox Era. We're not IGN, we're not Bloomberg. The fact that I think people lose sight of the fact that it's a fairly big deal that an outlet like us can get the CEO of Xbox on the show. It's pretty cool. I mean, remind me about all the PlayStation podcasts that get Jim and Herman on and all the times they grilled them on this wildly successful games as a service initiative. Anyone? Do you really want women to be treated like dogs? Gimme a break.
Cocktail sticks or match sticks under the eyes, like a TV just blaring PlayStation adverts at him. Anyway, in terms of the show format, just to set expectations for you folks sitting here going, 'When are you going to play the interview?' We're going to do a normal episode of the podcast, and at some later on in the show, we're going to say, 'Okay, it's time,' and we will play it. It won't be the end. We'll do it sooner rather than later. So just sit tight and enjoy the show. This is a celebratory episode for reaching a milestone, which is why he came on. People ask, 'How do you get him?' It's like, he likes us. He thinks we're good. Not even making that up, which is really weird. And we know how to politely ask, and they trust us.
I will say, we asked them, 'Do you want us to run questions and stuff by you first?' They're like, 'No, we trust you.' The phrase 'We trust you' was said, and Nick's eyes almost bulged out of his head. We were like, 'Oh, okay. No worries. Like, you shouldn't.' It's interesting though. 250 episodes for us. It is a big deal. This show, this channel, this team started coalescing together six and a bit years ago. We only all finally met for the first time last year at Gamescom, thanks to the community that are watching right now that funded us to go out there. We managed to take that surprise a little bit further and do a load of stuff extra. And now here we are, 250 episodes in. We've got multiple shows, we've got a huge Patreon community. We have a view into the other side of the industry because this is all execs and publishers and indie developers trying to get their games seen and picked up, as well as press, creators, CEOs, all sorts. It was really interesting chatting to other creators in similar spots to us. I spent a good chunk of the show with someone that I've watched on Easy Allies for years, Daniel Bloodworth, who is a very nice man IRL. I met him at the Veilguard preview, and he was very nice. He's an absolute dude. It's just been a really, really fun time, and the fact that we've had these kinds of opportunities to go and do this sort of stuff is down to you guys. So big...
There's one guy who's completely lost his mind over you. There's just this regular pleb from Australia who's the biggest Fortnite leaker on the planet, and his son doesn't even know he got one. He doesn't even care. Doesn't even give a [ __ ]. Now before we get into what we've been playing, there are a couple of super chats to tackle, if you would be so kind, Nick.
Yeah, let me find them. Okay. Greg: 'While it's nice to see regular Nick back, I am disappointed to see we haven't got handsome Nick today.' What do you mean? What is that supposed to mean? How am I not handsome? I got lots of compliments last night at my wife's...
Ursula's got lovelier hair.
Oh, my hair's those rings. I can't stand my hair. I absolutely hate my hair. But yes. Comic Book Reporter: 'Hey, so what's happening with the Activision Marvel and Transformers games? 'Cause I'm dying to play three of them.' Last I heard, I'm not too sure about the Transformers ones, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of the Activision Marvel games should still be coming back. It's probably a wait for it, if I had to guess. Like with a lot of stuff, I haven't heard. With John's reporting that they were doing a COD soon, they're spreading it out most likely because they did the big dump with...
It's been a good time, and yeah, Modern Warfare 2 should arrive very soon. Not the remaster, but the OG. The OG 2009's Modern Warfare 2.
Oh really? Yeah. Not naming conventions, man. No, wait, wait. There's three Modern Warfare 2s. The 360 version.
Yeah, the 360 version. Right, okay. Not 2022. 2021? I forget what year that was. Honestly, it's very confusing. Activision, stop it.
No, they don't make money. They don't care. Speaking before we get to what we've been playing, speaking of Phil being on, before we pressed record on the interview with Phil, he was saying...
The best drink I've ever had, Nick and I have it because of your show. And he uses our code, XboxEra, at www.control.com/xboxera to get some of Bill's favorite drink.
No, this is a lie. This is not true. This is completely... He would have said if I had brought it up.
Oh, okay. Sure. For sure. All right. Let's talk about what we've been playing. It's been a weird, weird week because a lot of the stuff that I had been playing went live while I wasn't here. So yes, I did the South of Midnight preview, but I was lucky enough to get... Did your access end up working in the end, Nick? Did you get a chance?
I did not get to play South of Midnight in the end. I was quite frustrated. I kept...
The way I'm going to phrase that... I think I raised fair points, right? I thought the platforming was run-of-the-mill. I enjoyed the combat quite a lot. But yes, you have a developer out there saying the gameplay is not the focus for us. I'm paraphrasing here, but they're like, 'Hey, the art, the music, the sound, the story, the atmosphere, this is what we're focusing on as a creative team.' And yeah, it pays off. It looks incredible, and the vibes are off the charts. But as a game, it was okay with some really good bits but also some kind of 'eh' bits. But it's early days still. It was also early game...
Which definitely I think are going to be mostly story focused because you get all of your abilities it seems in chapter 3. So if I had to guess, chapters 1 and 2 you get your combat abilities, and in chapter 3 you get your traversal ones. This build is a preview build, which if people haven't done them very often, they're not touched up that much. So this one did not have V-Sync working, and the right stick controls were off. Like, it took too long to start moving, then once it did, the acceleration was way too high, and you couldn't change any of it up. It was odd to me because the first time I played through the demo, I found that the camera was wildly accelerating as I was trying to move it...
Halo or something, and I've adjusted the curve, and the build just didn't like what I had done. Also, if you've run the little thing for trying to fix stick drift, what it does is it adjusts the internal dead zones to where it stops drifting. So if you've done that with pretty bad drift, it will mean you have to move it more before you start to actually move. But yeah, South of Midnight looks and sounds amazing. I'm really intrigued to play through the full thing. It gets surprisingly dark. You see the memories as you're going through to kind of figure out what caused the pain in the area. In this particular segment, it is a tale of two brothers, and one of the brothers...
And had me grinning here to it, even considering the subject matter. You learn through this story, and then as you're playing the final section of this platforming meets challenge to get to the top of this man tree that is the pain of where this guy Benji had been locked up, it starts playing this Southern ballad telling the story of how he was locked in the tree, all from the brother that did the deed's perspective. And it was just like, this is so neat. It was very cool. I admire what they've gone for here with South of Midnight. I look forward to playing more.
Yeah, and combat is definitely... You do combat in specific times that it suits the story.
Every time you guys say 'the brothers,' I keep hearing 'the Mario Brothers.' The brothers, the brothers, the brothers. Every time you guys say it, it keeps repeating in my head. Call him the Peach Brothers because it's a peach tree that he is enveloped by. I have to say, the game is really pretty, and I think it is still on Unreal Engine 4 because it's the type of thing where transitioning late into 5 wouldn't have changed this because it's not open world at all. It's very directed, linear levels where you can go back and forth at points. But I thought the combat was good. You get your ass kicked if you get hit, so it is really focused on not getting hit. You only get one heal, which is that green orb you see floating around. Pretty much whenever it's yellow...
You can get stuck in, and if you're not careful, you can get your ass kicked. Yeah, it's definitely when they're going for the remarkable aspects, the storytelling and the feel, the vibes of everything were amazing. I really like that part of it.
Yep. I'm looking forward to it. April is not far away. So if you haven't checked out our preview yet, you can view it on XboxEra.com or obviously watch the video on our YouTube channel. It's available there for your enjoyment. That's pretty much all I got a chance to play. I played, I started replaying Ori and the Will of the Wisps on my ROG Ally on the plane, and I was amazed at how much the ROG Ally did not tank the battery. I ran it down at 720p still...
Delighted. That's good. We have a little shout out from YouTube member Wen Branch. Yes, Wen Branch. Nick, feels good to have your Fortnite leaks vindicated, eh? What's next for them? LOL. More DC stuff? You're used to your Fortnite leaks. I'm still waiting on Robin, still due to come. Cyborg. One Piece isn't that your big thing that people still go nuts about?
Yeah, One Piece is the big one that everyone's waiting on. I don't know. My attitude's always been, again, my guy's not a data miner.
So the game doesn't get hacked, and they organized to have stuff in the TMNT. I wasn't leaking TMNT. I was leaking that a Paramount deal was done. Part of that was TMNT. We also ended up getting Transformers. We also ended up getting other stuff that's Paramount IP. So it's not data mining stuff. I just wish a lot of the kids would understand that. But yeah, I just bought Iron Man for the third time.
I've got three Iron Man variants now in Fortnite. Ah, this latest one is so good. It's got the Doom outfit, or like the Doom Infamous... I don't know, Infamous Iron Man. And it's like the very comic booky, OG comic booky...
Fortnite. Come on, that's cool. Well, it's always... People say, 'Who cares about the Fortnite leak?' Like, man, they are far and away the biggest ones that he does. Almost my whole following is just Fortnite stuff now. It's crazy madness. But yeah, that's about it for me in terms of what I've been playing. Jesse, do you want to talk a little bit about what you've been playing?
I will. It'll be a newsy segment too because about... Avowed is out for people who spend a little more money. Trash, I know. Unfortunately, that guy ended up saying 'DEI' and 'woke' a lot, so he's gone. 'Woke slop from Microsoft.' Avowed is really goddamn good. I ended up giving it an 8.8. I got a really long... If you look at this video, it is 23 minutes and 23 seconds long because I like Michael Jordan, I guess. Yeah, it was...
Maybe he glanced at it. Maybe he went and read it afterwards, you know? But I said I refused to suggest he really liked it. So congratulations. And then our art guy, Pre-Drag, just went to absolute town on it with the best looking review I think we've had.
Better than Indie? Yeah, no. This Avowed one, he went crazy on it. It is so good looking. I cannot... Outside of all the ads that kind of messed it up a bit, it's just really pretty. Got to pay the bills. I'll put it in chat.
Yeah, I know. Hey, look, there's a vignette ad that slows my entire computer down. Like, I clicked X and it didn't want to actually do anything. It is quite nice. I did really like how he did Indie though. Mmm. Oh yeah, and the Starfield and the other ones he's done. They're really...
It's me doing it. I give him a week. If it's anyone else, I give him a day. Yeah. I'll do it for Capcom Fighting Collection 2. No, but so Avowed... Avowed is to Skyrim what The Outer Worlds was to Fallout. It's not a clockwork simulation heavy game. It is a direct forward Obsidian writing, which I think is fantastic in the game. I have seen some other people saying they don't like the writing. Always a subjective thing. The biggest difference I would say this has over... If you want that Skyrim itch, it's not going to do the simulation stuff that people like in Skyrim, but its...
Trying to... It wants you to experiment. You can reset all your stats and your abilities at any point for some money, but actually having the gear for all of that stuff can be hard because enemies don't respawn, and there's essentially a finite amount of resources throughout the game, which took me just around 50 hours to do one playthrough. I hopped back in and did way different choices early on, and everything changed. So seeing other people try and say it gives you the illusion of choice felt like [ __ ] because things really changed quite a bit. I've seen some bizarre criticism in the like, 'Oh, you know, people don't arrest you or beat you up if you do things.' But it's my understanding that...
You're an envoy from the Aedyr Empire, and a big part of it is you're coming to the Living Lands, which is a place. If you've ever played Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, you'll have more idea of things. But they do a pretty damn good job because I hadn't played those in a long time. They reintroduce all the concepts, and at any time during conversation you can press a button and key figures and things pop up and tell you exactly what they are if you're feeling confused. So you are a Godlike, which is a character who in their conception phase was touched by one of the gods of this area. The whole thing about the Pillars universe is that souls and gods are real, and souls are this real tangible thing. Like in Pillars 1 and 2, you are a Watcher and they can look...
So you are interesting for that weird reason. The king seems to really like you, and he raises you and takes you in as an orphan, and then you do your regular old character customization stuff. You do your background. Nothing super in-depth, nothing crazy new. Just really good writing with a mix of solid RPG systems and phenomenal combat. It's hard to get into all of it without doing any spoilers because I think a lot of people are just going to want to play this when it hits Game Pass on the 18th. If you haven't already done the premium edition upgrade, it's probably their weakest one. It gives you some outfits for your team and an art book and the soundtrack.
I don't know, whatever. Yeah, but I thought the game's fantastic. It's reviewed fine overall. The big difference on this one when people look at aggregate sites is if you look at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it has 52 perfect scores. This has one or two. So that's why it's an 81 instead of in the high 80s. You can go to Starfield. Starfield has like 30 perfect 5 out of 5, 10 out of 10, 100 out of 100, whatever it ends up being. So quite often people will say it can't hit 90, and it's like, yeah, most games can't hit 90 anymore because they just do not get nearly as many perfect scores as a very select handful. But on the whole, this has been well reviewed.
Super... It looks improved. There's still moments where I watch the combat and there's something just odd about it.
Well, I think first person combat with melee weapons is always odd to a degree. Why? Indie, I reckon Indie nailed it as old as [ __ ]. Indie's just janky slapstick and it's fun.
Yeah, it was not great. Like, it was fun, but it wasn't like epic. But Indie's very funny because of the... I'm talking about the feel. I'm talking about the feel of it. But you could button mash your way through Indie combat a huge amount if you wanted to.
I think we have very different ideas on what makes a good feeling game combat.
Talk about the feel. Yet I haven't played it, and that's what I'm saying. I'm saying it looks like there's just something a bit odd about... You're talking about the feel, that's right. It looks like it's going to feel... I know because there are certain tells, there are certain tells with that sort of stuff where you can sort of see that there's something off.
Yeah, I'll give it that it improves though. Yeah, from everyone I've talked to... I talked to Grub a lot before this came out, and it's like, yeah, the combat is amazing overall. The game's super fast. No matter what, you don't use stamina to run, you don't use stamina to jump. You only use it for attacking, blocking, and parrying and stuff once you've unlocked that in the fighter tree. But you can run and you can jump and no...
Go to your camp no matter where you are. I've seen a lot of people saying that actually it's even more interesting and fun playing it on hard rather than normal. It depends. From a combat perspective, if you're keeping up with all your gear, the combat isn't too rough on normal. If you're not keeping up on the gear, and this is a game where you will want to do everything if you're playing on normal or harder. You have to do everything on harder. You'll want to on normal. On easy, you don't really have to because it's easy and you don't need all the gear you're going to get from doing all the other stuff, or all the money you'll get to upgrade. It's a basic but still deep gear system that if you are going to...
All kinds of enemies. Just a quick heads up, King Xbox just joined the Xbox Era community YouTube channel. Appreciate you. Thank you for being here. And Jason, YouTube ever has a super chat. He's asked, 'How was third person mode for Avowed?' It feels like a thing that works but is not... It's not like Veilguard where it was just this game's built for third person. The camera knows how to move and sway. You're just in third person and it's just behind you, and it doesn't move like Veilguard's moved in the right way so you could always see what you're hitting directly in front of you or what you're doing. It wouldn't turn all the way sometimes because it knew you couldn't then see what's happening if it did that. This is a camera that is...
For a hundred years. Which, you know, that's... I think it speaks to a lot about some of the stuff we've heard Phil speak about, about how Xbox Studios kind of have to treat things like they're their own business. How do we stay profitable? How do we make the right decisions? And they had a whole talk about it with, I think it was their VP of Operations, Marcus, I want to say Morgan, and someone else. And how they want to celebrate their 100th birthday, which is like 70-something years away. But it's an interesting position to take in terms of how do we stay alive for 100 years? We'll see. Good luck, Obsidian. I think Avowed looks great.
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, outside of that, anything else you wanted to mention that you've been playing before? Has turned... Yesterday's stream was Elden Ring Nightreign, which unfortunately we couldn't play. You can't play as a group right now even though it's a... I think they just want the matchmaking tested, not playing together as a group. So did a stream last night. Really fun. Going to... Its longevity? No idea what it's going to end up being. They've got a lot of stuff they can pull from. They've got different maps they can pull from if they want to put new biomes in. They've got ridiculous amounts of different enemy types they can pull in. So if it's going to be an actual live service game with just a ton of content, I could see it as something I really enjoy as long...
It works amazingly well. It is super quick. It is 10 times faster than Elden Ring itself is. It's really weird, and it was weird getting used to it because they've never made something like this before. Call me cynical on that, but is this a studio being very clever in terms of what it's doing with its resources? I saw some criticism they've pulled in bosses from Dark Souls games. 'Why are these in here? This is Elden Ring.' And it's like, because it's fun, but also variety of content, but also we get to make money from selling this, and people that like Elden Ring will buy it.
Yeah, I mean, Elden Ring was like a newer, different Dark Souls anyways. It all fits. It was a new take...
And this is like their latest evolution on it, and I think it works really well. It's just going to be, is it worth $40 for a weekend, or is it going to be something you can play for months and have a lot of fun with? Which we won't know until launch. But all the super moves and the cooldowns and [ __ ], they've never done anything like that before, and it ends up working really well. You feel both incredibly powerful and also scared because you can die really quick. So I like it a lot.
Cool. Just a quick heads up to the chat. People joining us here maybe for the first time, just because we're going to be playing the Phil interview later on. Do appreciate it if you could hit that like button, you know? If you can, it does help us out with the algorithm. If you don't sub, if you haven't subscribed to us before, consider subscribing. We produce a...
104th? Or wait, no. I think there's like 70 top critics. I think I counted it earlier. So we are 170th of that score. Boom. We leveled up. Our mega boost abilities from it from zero to 170 or one XP. What about you, Nick? Have you been playing anything this week?
Yes, I've been on a somewhat Capcom bent lately. Sure. So I have been playing for a long time and reviewed Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, which finally came to Xbox, which we had shadow dropped at the Capcom surprise.
He reckons the Xbox version might be the best console version in terms of... PlayStation and Switch have always had worse input latency on fighters, which is why a lot of people in fighting game tournaments and stuff were annoyed when PlayStation became the dominant platform.
Well, I know 360 was definitely the platform for tournaments and stuff.
But yeah, I think according to Justin, it might be the best console version in terms of the input lag and all that sort of stuff. But I've been playing the crap out of that, and just the nostalgia that floods back. So many of these games I played...
This version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, it's the arcade version, but apparently the Dreamcast version is the superior version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 because I think that was one of the only Capcom games to be made on Naomi hardware, which is the Dreamcast hardware. So the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, I think, is the definitive version. So I'm glad I still have my copy in my Dreamcast. But I personally, and I say in my review, I can't tell. I'm not that in the dirt where I know the nitty-gritty, 'Oh yeah, this frame timing is off and blah blah blah.' To me, it just felt perfect and looked like the...
So the wave hit me harder with Marvel vs. Capcom 1. And you can probably tell in my review, I just had so many moments where I just wanted to soak in everything. It was so good. The whole first minute and a half of the review, the music.
Yeah, the whole first minute was just the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 intro. It was so... Ah, it's the way they've done the collection is very, very good. I just have one fairly major gripe and then a lesser gripe. The major gripe is how this has one save file that covers the whole collection. That is insane to me. I'm just baffled at that.
Individual games as DLC, and that's right. So you buy all the actual arcade games as DLC, that has save files per game, and yet this doesn't. I'm just like, very weird.
What do you mean? So, you know, what I did was I started with The Punisher because that's the scrolling beat 'em up. So you have progress. I'll save once I hit stage three, and then I'll switch to Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Make it halfway through, go to save. 'Oh, do you want to override The Punisher save?' I'm like, no, I don't. Leave The Punisher save alone. Why don't you give me saves for each of these games? That does feel like a massive oversight on their part.
It is. And I didn't see that many reviews mention it. The only...
Stopping to switch between games is only something you're going to notice if you start playing a game, get over it, want to save your spot, and then switch to something else. That's the only way you're really going to notice it. The main thing you're going to notice everywhere though is what Justin Wong was talking about, and that's having a really hard time finding a match because there's no crossplay.
Yes, that's right. That was the second gripe. No crossplay. So on Xbox, these collections have historically not sold the best. Part of the reason they don't come...
So the online population is obviously not quite there. So all I can do is encourage more and...
Codes. What switch? Xbox. You've gotten three codes.
Yes, I've gotten three codes because I got this from a patron of ours. Scarcely Relevant actually was the one that got me Marvel vs. Capcom. He's a lovely boy. He's one of the OG patrons. He is indeed. But yes, Marvel vs. Capcom Collection is fantastic. Go out and get it. It's the Dreamcast collection. Hits in me. They don't call it that, but it's essentially a Dreamcast collection. It is the Dreamcast collection. Why they should have just talked to Sega and said, 'Can we just call this the Capcom Dream...' They might have, and they probably wanted money.
Yeah, that would have been so cool. They've taken everything down, including a lot of Dreamcast games. So they probably have plans for something like that, which is why I never had a chance because you can't play any that they've delisted. All their old [ __ ] from Sega.
Have I? Yeah, like you can't... That collection I played when we were doing retro hangouts, you can't buy it anymore. It's all delisted.
Oh yeah, yeah. Maybe for the Switch as part of NSO, and then you boot it up on NSO. And it was a rumor mill. You laugh. It was a rumor mill where I was given information that led me to believe Dreamcast games will come to NSO. Can you imagine? Then you boot it up and they do that Dreamcast boot up screen on...
Another Capcom game I've been playing, also thanks to Scarcely Relevant, is Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. So yeah, been playing a bit of Dead Rising 1 again. Man, it's been so long since I've played Dead Rising. There's just a lot of stuff you forget. You get put in the mall and straight away people start dying. You're like, 'Oh no, I can't...' And I remember getting annoyed with the game originally because I couldn't rescue people because I had this OCD thing where I didn't want anyone to die, and people just started dying straight away. I'm like, 'Oh man, how do...'
