Ming Zhou, Senior Vice President of Software Development - Structural Analysis and Optimization at Altair Engineering, delivered a welcome address for the OpenRadioss Users' Day 2025 on July 16, 2025. In his speech, Zhou stated that he and "GM Eric" were driving forces behind the decision three years ago to open source the industrial code, which he described as a "very brave step." He said the initiative focused from day one on building an engaged community and that the idea was discussed with companies and experts such as LM Sur and Paul Dubois, who responded positively. Zhou said the goal was to serve the global community and enable faster innovation, and he noted that the explicit dynamics analysis community faces new challenges such as electric vehicle and battery safety problems. He added that an open platform engaging with academic communities would open new directions for innovation. Zhou said the growth of the community and enthusiasm "proved that we did the right thing" and cited the open source model DeepSeek as an example of a strengthening global open source movement. He thanked attendees for contributing technically and on the application side. In a September 2022 interview previewing the K trade fair, Zhou said Altair brings solutions enabling digital transformation of the entire process from material supply and carbon footprint data capture to engineering products that reduce carbon footprint. He stated that Altair resonates with the entire supply chain from material to product delivery and aims to build digital solutions that bring the operational phase of products back into the development cycle and circular economy. Zhou described circular economy and digitization as hot topics and expressed enthusiasm for face-to-face meetings with customers.
“We took a very brave step three years ago together with GM Eric; we were the driving forces making this quite a unique decision to basically open source proven industrial code.”
“From day one we focused on building an actively engaged community, and before we openly launched the initiative, we bounced the idea with some companies and experts like LM Sur and Paul Dubois who responded very positively and enthusiastically.”
“We want to serve the global community and enable faster innovation; that was the driving force behind the bold idea.”
“The explicit dynamics analysis community arrived at a point where the challenges we face demand new thinking and new solutions, such as problems with electric vehicles and battery safety.”
